I s God punishing my parents?

Here in the Southeastern US (or maybe the whole Eastern US) we have what are called "pop-up thunderstorms." These occur on a near-daily basis during the summer. In the late afternoon, a local collection of unstable air will open up, violently dumping a large quantity of water over a small area. These storms may only cover one square mile, sometimes less.

This has been a summer of abundant rainfall in Alabama. Most areas have had the storms once or even twice a day. Yet, for some reason, my parents' yard is having a local drought. I experienced this twice when I visited this weekend. I would drive through torrential downpours where the visibility suddenly dropped from several miles to ten feet. But always, when I approached the house, the rain would stop, or reduce to a trickle. The entire valley is lushly green. But for a 10 acre area in my parents' neighboorhood, the grass is yellow. Why are they suffering this illogical drought? Is God punishing them? Does he still use the weather to smite?

Suffering is a test. It's a test of our faith, our character, our values, and our love for God. It's a test that can make us bitter or better. It can make us bitter if we jump to the wrong conclusions about why God has allowed our pain. It can make us better if our eyes are opened to the wonder, power, wisdom, goodness, and love of God.

God is punishing your parents, then He's punishing the entire Northeast as well. Ain't too much that's "lushly green" around here these days.

There are numerous reasons why God should punish the heathen Northeast. But the God-fearing citizens of the Southeast simultaneously receive the scorn of the nation and plentiful rain from the heavens.

The question is, why are the people of my parents' neighborhood being singled out?

there are more Catholics per square yard up here than anywhere else in the country.

OK, it is pretty heathen. But I certainly don't scorn y'all...I grew up in Virginia, for goodness sake. We only make fun of West Virginians.

I suppose we should keep this all in perspective. A little drought is not a severe smiting. It is nothing compared to the floods being brought upon the liberalist Europeans and Communist Chinese.

You should understand something:

God.

I'd suggest them... (none / 0) (#10)

...to move, at least temporarily. If the drought spot moves with them, it's a good chance it's something personal between them and the deities.

However, conventional wisdom suggests to expect the dry spot will stay where it is, as it is more likely to be caused by local interaction between the weather patterns and the morphological elements of the area.
