Today I voted in the Primaries. I consider myself independent, and I chose to vote Republican because of the state legislature and sheriff elections.

To readers of Adequacy who hail from non-democratic nations, I will keep you and your countrymen in my prayers. I hope some day you will join the free peoples of the world, and choose your leaders through fair elections.

Today, I have been thinking a lot on the subject of patriotism. In America, this has been a year of much flag waving. I wonder if this will result in a higher voter turnout. Maybe it is the cynic in me, but I doubt it.

I tried it once or twice but it always makes me feel ill afterwards.

have no time to research the candidates viewpoints on the many issues, therefore any vote I make would be based soley on superficial crap like looks and voice, plus anything the rumor/gossip mill decides to float my way. Yeah I know Im a bad American...spare me the lectures.

What I'm curious about is if an uneducated vote is better than no vote at all. It would seem as though no vote would be better, right?

If you are not prepared to vote, do not taint the election with your ignorance.

The American republic was not conceived with foreknowledge of mass-media and the consequent manipulative possibilities afforded to our politicians.

Direct popular election as it stands is by and large a joke. Our descendents will almost certainly look back on us and chortle knowingly.

Didn't take much time (5.00 / 1) (#5)

All the research I did took about 3 hours of looking through candidates' mailings and browsing websites, and talking on AIM to family members. This was all I needed to give me a good idea on who I wanted for the major positions of Governor, U.S Rep, State Rep, and sheriff.

I can see your point about abstaining if uneducated. In fact, I did this. I did not vote for positions like state auditor, tax assessor, or Industry and Agriculture Commissioner. I'm not sure who these people are, or even what they do.

But I still think 3 hours to figure out who I want is time well spent. Doesn't your nation deserve that much?

Don't you and your family deserve that much! That being said, I suck. Thus far in my seven years of voting eligibility I have only voted during presidential elections and only for the positions that I happened to know anything about the candidates rather than actively seeking to find out their positions.

What a downer. I feel bad now.

It's definitely your duty to at least void the ballot that belongs to you -- otherwise, some less-than-honest persons are likely to use it for their own means.

Case-and-point: Bush Jr.

That's why I got to the polling place as early as possible. Our state does not require any kind of ID to vote. You just show up and say "I'm George Washington." and they check your name off the list.

And to register, you just have to send in a postcard with your name, address, and signature. There's little stopping someone from registering under 50 aliases, and voting 50 times.

Some people have pointed out that (gasp) illegal immigrants could vote. With voter turnout hovering between 66-20% (depending on the importance of the election), I say if the border-jumpers want to vote, let 'em! I would take the vote of a civic-minded Mexican over mrt76's any day
