I will be leaving temporarily. My Biochemistry and Genetics finals will be held from Monday until Wednesday. I must properly binge on chocolaty intellectual goodness before I can fully vomit forth the required information.

So, sadly, I must pull myself away from my new favorite website for the next seven days.

I'm quite sure no one cares anyway, so I will shut up now.

OT: "RoBot". (none / 0) (#1)
by tkatchev on Thu Dec 13th, 2001 at 12:16:56 AM PST
You spelled the word "robot" wrong. Actually, the word itself is a neologism from the Czech language[1], stemming from the Slavonic root word "rob-", meaning "work, hard physical labor".

For example, in Russian we have words like "rabstvo" -- "slavery", "rabota" -- "work, vocation", "rabotatj" -- "to work, produce physical products".

Other Slavonic languages have similar words -- for example, Czech and Polish have "robota" -- meaning "work that peasants are forced to do as payment to their landlord", "misery". Ukranian "zrobyty" -- "to make, manufacture".

[1] The word "robot" first appeared in a sci-fi short story by the Czech author Karel Czapek, published in 1921.

Before the industrial revolution, wage laborers were the social underclass, considered just one little notch above slaves; in fact, some medieval societies didn't make a distinction between "slave" and "wage laborer" -- in that time, to be considered "free" you had to be socially and economically independent.

Just something to think about.

I'm aware that the German and Slavic families diverged more than 2000 years ago, but I can't help but wonder if there's a connection between "Arbeiten" and the "rob" word root.

The Indo-European roots come out at the weirdest times. I was just reading about how the Frog "ours" comes from the Indo-Euro root "RKSOS," meaning "destroyer," as opposed to "baer," which is a euphemism coming from the colour brown. The ancient Germans apparently considered RKSOS to be far too dangerous to say, so they needed another word to hold it at bay, so to speak.

War With the Newts is worth reading for the title alone. Giant, croaking sea-newts. I tremble just thinking about it.

Slave is, incidentally, quite happy that T-Kat is finally making an effort to understand Slave.

I thought it was coined by his brother?

Haven't read R. U. R., but War with the Salamanders was great. I'm going to read Meteor next.

For music buffs, Capek wrote the stories upon which a number of Janacek opearas are based, including the heart-stopping Makropoulos Affair.
