This is going to be one massive list, so be warned...

  • 2001
    • October
      • Today, get a day-planner from the Campus Store. Begin to plan and organize days.
      • Begin a Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday workout program. Concentrate on cardiovascular and endurance training.
      • Go the the College of Liberal Arts office. Get the paperwork for changing majors. Go to the undergraduate advisor in the Theatre Department, get her to sign on the dotted line. (This might also require going to the College of Fine Arts office...)
      • Purchase a Course Schedule once they come out at the end of the month. Find a foreign language class that will fit into schedule. (Spanish? French? German? Arabic?) This will be covered in the free-class-for-staff program, but will also be a five-six hour course, meaning that my grade in it will be enough to lift my GPA into the 2.0+ range, allowing me to stay enrolled.
      • Perform ritual celebration of Samhain during the day. Work Samhain night at the Club. Get a fly-on-the-wall view of the public Halloween party downtown, and make a huge haul of tips at the same time.
    • November
      • Register for the class. (This could be late October. the registration days for the Spring aren't listed yet.)
      • Continue the Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday workout scheme. Look around for a good, cheap yoga class to improve flexibility.
      • Start campaigning for the Microcomputer Applications Specialist position opening here.
    • December
      • Figure out how the hell Laura and I will split our time between her family in Alabama, my family in Dallas, and work here in Austin.
      • Buy some intro books (or, preferably, the textbook) for whatever language I decide to take. Do a little advanced study.
      • Get presents for the family, and for Laura.

That's all I'm doing for now. It's lunchtime, and I need to do some running around. The 2002 edition will perhaps come out tomorrow.

Paganism is a spiritual wasteland. It doesn't work; dump paganism and maybe you'll get some more harmony in your life.

I'm sure your level of enlightenment entitles you to such broad sweeping statements like that. You might even have a Certificate of Enlightenment to go with it. Bully for you.

Whether he chooses paganism (Wicca), Islam, Christianity, Zen Buddhism or the Church of Bob, what does it matter? It's his choice. If he happens to find some measure of satisfaction in his beliefs, who are you to judge? If you feel so bold as to suggest that recanting his pagan beliefs and embracing the One True Religion (tm) will make his life all better, then I will feel so bold as to laugh loud and long in your face.

Or, as the Western Bible would suggest, remove the mote from your own eye before attending to your brother's.

What is Samhain? Am I missing something good?

Otherwise, admirable that you are organizing your life. Mine generally gets organized for me, or else I'm just sorta muddling through.

Is an excuse for "paganists" to get together and bugger each other. (I guess they think it's some sort of "religious" rite or something...)

Yes, there will be singing. There will be singing about the dark times. -- Bertolt Brecht

'Samhain' == 'Halloween' in pagan-speak. (none / 0) (#5)

Like all made-up religions, Paganism uses an elaborate system of jargon to disguise its lack of actual content.

As a Pagan of many years I disagree with your assessment of my Religion. The practices of the western christian church are based on Pagan rituals and calendar feast days- hence easter - based on OESTRE falls at different times due to the pahses of the moon as it was originally a moon/fertility festival - nothing to do with christianity at all.
Same for Yuletide which is called christmas by christians - originally set on the winter solstice - December 21st- it was moved inadvertently by the christians when the calendar was reset - they forgot to move it back Jesus was certainly not born in December.
Also I would refer you to the Council of Nicea - I cant remember the exact date right now but will post a link as soon as I can- all my info is in my head and in books - but it was they - round about the 3rd century who said 'make devils of the pagan gods'- hence we have satan modeled on Cernunnos -(as an aside here i am not a satanist- to believe in satan you must first be a christian as 'it' was invented by them) and adopted the Pagan festivals and built churches on our old sacred grounds so that people would go to the same place at the same time and find themselves worshipping the christian god and not their own home-grown ones!!
To perpetuate these myths regarding paganism is abusive, of course fertility rites were and still are praticed- but we do not find many peadophiles in our ranks - they all appear to join the catholic church or some other christian church.
Again the myths were put about by both the conquering Romans and later the christian church- in order to control the populace.
Christians tend not to like us because of that- we refuse to be controlled by other people- and organised religions- generally run by men- do not like that at all.
Lastly- christianity is a foreign religion - middle eastern to be exact - and has no place in Britain - where I am - I wish all the christians had and would leave us in peace and stop forcing their beliefs down our throats and assuming they are right and we are wrong

samhain (none / 0) (#10)
by psych wanderer on Sat Oct 13th, 2001 at 03:30:20 PM PST
Samhain (pronounced Sowen) is the last feast of the Autumn - before full wine=ter sets in. It is the time when the veil between the world of the living and the world of the spirits /dead is lifted and you can see loved ones long lost. You may if you are blessed - see into the future at this time also.

Samhain is now taken over in secular and christian thought by Halloween which is Hallows- eve - the day before all saints day in the christian calendar- the christian church could not shake the local populasc of europe from the celebration of its day of the dead so it made the day afterwards a christian festival and has since attempted to make Halloween/Samhain more sinister than it is. i could go on for hours about this but i will save it up for more lessons.
