Author's Note: This will be purposefully vague.

What do you do when you see a friend in obvious emotional distress?

It is not always easy to decide how these situations should be handled. Particularly when you know that some people are misconstruing what is happening and reading into the situation things that are not there.

I have a friend, who is in obvious need of some help, be it just to talk for a while. One of the problems is finding not just the time, but also the place to allow this to happen. Work is not exactly the place to have a meaningful discussion about life and your objectives and expectations. Those are personal things, and besides, it can be incredibly awkward to discuss such things with snooping eyes and ears about.

I guess I will just have to play this by ear. You cannot force someone to take your advice, but when you have been sought out to just be someone to listen, I'm not going to let them down.

That would be against my concept of friendship.

A friend in need (none / 0) (#1)

is a burden to be avoided. I suggest finding yourself more stable friends who don't impose on you like this.

alas, this one is my fault (none / 0) (#2)

since I threw myself into the middle of it. It is also the first time I've had to do something like this for this particular friend, who has been a friend of mine for over a year now.

I am not who you think I am.

You could always... (5.00 / 1) (#3)

take this person out for lunch or after-work drinks. That way you could talk in a 'safe' atmosphere away from work.

And helping a person in need is exactly what true friends are there for, zikzak's comments notwithstanding. Hope it goes OK.

the lunch issue (none / 0) (#4)

unfortunately, we usually go to lunch as a group, so it can be difficult to try to exclude the others... but I'm workin' on it. Dinner is more difficult as I've got a kid, and my friend takes evening classes.

Ah, the life of excessively busy people.

I am not who you think I am.
