Now is a bit of a tense hour. Between people in shock, people in terror, people in fear, there lies the heart of the matter: people. We've experienced a great afront against peace, against freedom, against life.

Callous acts of disregard towards human life cannot be tollerated, nor should it be tollerated. Cowardice by way of terrorism is without honor, this has been a shallow undertaking by shallow people.

May their punishment be harsh and swift.

And then, may the rest of us heal our lives and continue to live to the fullest.

But until that punishment can be dealt, let us wait and see so that we may know who the party (or parties) responsible are. There is no excuse for running off half cocked, we must be thoughtful and not reactive.

I was rudely woken up this morning by my father-in-law, who correctly assumed I would be interested in the news that is apparently being broadcast around the world. I spent the next few minutes in shock, the next fifteen minutes trying to convince myself I could go back to sleep, and the rest of the morning trying to pull myself out of my funk.

It's wonderful how a beautiful wife and daughter can affect one's perspective. This tragedy will not be forgotten, but life goes on. I cannot help but be happy with them.

At this time, patience and temperance need to be our watch words. We've spent a lot of time telling other nations not to be hasty and to let the United Nations make an unbiased judgment. Now it's our turn. If we go off half-cocked, eager to bring justice and retribution to the guilty, we'll punish and alienate at least half of the world community. Why? Because the world isn't simple, anymore.

I'm pondering writing up an article about this, to explain why I believe the US should not be the ones to bring vengeance to our enemies. The US should engage in a shared investigation with the UN, then let the UN make its determination on the proper course of action. Not because the US doesn't have every right to pursue justice and vengeance, but because the US is not alone in this crisis. Let me repeat that: the US is not alone in this.

This attack marks a distinct change in terrorist tactics. The concerted hijacking and suicide of four commercial airline jets is a tactic never before used by any terrorists in the world. We were complacent in our knowledge that it couldn't be done. We were proven wrong, and because of it no community is safe. No nation can say that they are immune to the threat of kamikaze attacks on such a scale. And because of that, every nation needs to join in the effort to hunt down and punish those responsible. We need to teach terrorists that it doesn't matter which nation they attack. The world community will band together against them and make their efforts futile.

I expect a lot of resistence to this idea. I also expect to be summarily ignored. But I'm going to be proposing this to every US senator and representative with an email address.

The time for contemplating isolation is at an end. We no longer have the luxury to limit our thinking to a national level.

    Gods help us all.
