Besides the fact that this will end up confusing a few people, isn't this less than courteous, at the least?

use the same tactics that Etoys successfully used to quash that upstart subversive "artists" commune, etoy. Sue them into oblivion!

Since I though a site about subjects like kiddie porn, religion, anti-linux and tons of other subjects, is now talking about video games... yeah.

Adequacy.org does not own "adequacy" (5.00 / 2) (#5)
by madtimebat on Thu Aug 1st, 2002 at 08:25:23 PM PST
It is a relatively commone word. I guess if they were copying this site or similiar enough to be easily confused, then that would be a point. But, it appears to be an entirely different type of website. Besides, I assume this site is a .org because adequacy.com was already taken. In other words, someone already thought of this using the word "adequacy".

When I was going to college, the sorities were complaining that there were stores that sold greek letters (which could be assembled into their names). The sorities claimed to own the greek alphabit. The baseball team the Dodgers is trying to shut down a bar that is older than they are, which happens to be called the old nickname for Brooklyn, Dodgers. Hollywood, CA is trying to deny the right of the city that it was named after (Hollywood, FL) to use its name. The Olympics claims that they invented the name, and that pizza shops can't use the name. Three thousand years ago, someone else invented that name.

I agree with copyright and trademark ownership, but come on. There should be an outer limit.

Nonsense. (none / 0) (#7)

Adequacy.org does not own "adequacy" . It is a relatively commone word

Whether or not a word is commonplace has no bearing on its ability to be trademarked. For example, what word could be more common than "apple"? (For the benefit of the hard of thinking, that was a rhetorical question.) Yet Apple Records and Apple Computers have both trademarked the word "Apple" and each company's trademark is valid within its own area of business (i.e. music and computers respectively). Since one Adequacy already has the trademark on the word "adequacy" when used to describe a website, the other Adequacy is "passing off" by marketing a website under the name "Adequacy".

I assume this site is a .org because adequacy.com was already taken

It's ignorance like this that has lead to the mess that DNS is currently in. I think it's rather more likely that Adequacy.org chose a ".org" TLD because it's a non-profit organisation.

I agree with copyright and trademark ownership, but come on.

It's just a pity that you have no knowledge of trademark or copyright law, other than what you learned on Slashdot.

This is not the case sir. Unlike those liberal minded fools, adequacy strives to make a grand profit. Adequacy (OTC: ADEQ) is a fully licenced publicly traded corporation. It has a spiced list of owners, shareholders and board members

On the topic of profit - has the rest of the adequacy board decided on my plans to release adequacy on microfishe?

I prefer to use proper etiquette when talking with my peers. Do you have a problem with using good manners when addressing others?

Sir, (5.00 / 2) (#13)
by jvance on Mon Aug 5th, 2002 at 04:46:09 PM PST
if you have difficulty divining the meaning of the salutation in question, then may I kindly suggest the simple device of substituting "asshole" for every instance of "sir."

Of course, sir, that only applies to missives addressed to you.

Have a good day, sir.

Microfiches (5.00 / 2) (#12)
by The Mad Scientist on Mon Aug 5th, 2002 at 12:10:36 PM PST
Excellent idea!

You can store high amount of informations on microfiches, with the advantage of needing only a microscope (if you don't have a "real" reader) to read them any time in the future. The storage is obvious and nonproprietary.

More "sophisticated" formats, on the other hand, are not really suitable for long-term storage. The media are ephemeral, the technology changes so fast the formats will get obsolete within a decade or two. I think radioastronomers have problems with decades old tapes with records of measurements - the tapes are rotting, the reading equipment is falling apart.

Common microfiches have a disadvantage, though; the polymer material can lose its properties with time, and become brittle or stick together when stacked. If you plan to save Adequacy's content for more than just the very next generation, I strongly suggest to etch the microfiches using any suitable photolithography methods into suitably durable material, ie. gold or platinum foil.

by because it isnt on Fri Aug 2nd, 2002 at 02:10:50 AM PST
that the Kur0shin/Slashdot weenies who opened this site purloined the pre-existing English word "adequacy", to get visitors to apply the dictionary definition of the word to their site.

I hope your scurs have healed up now.
