For some time now I've considered making the switch to Apple's OS-X operating system. I was thinking about getting a dual 1 ghz G4 system. This leads to a difficult decision.

I went to the apple store and priced out a dual 1 ghz G4 mac with 1.5GB of RAM, 160GB of disk, dual 23" displays and, of course, OS X. Total price: $11,745.00 USD.

Sacred mother of Brittney that's a lot of money. Here's what else I can do with 11,745:

2 Seattle Supersonics season tickets, excellent seats: $7,700.
Romantic dinner for 2 including drinks and gratuity: 115.00

So I can catch every Sonics game next season and treat my beloved Chloedancer to a dinner 35 times (to make up for talking about hoops too much) for the price of the OS X experience.

Help me out my beloved readers. What should I do?

	That's expensive, even considering the very high spec AND Apple's high prices. If you can afford to do it, and really think it's worth it, then do it, otherwise don't. Simple as that. There's not much more advice anyone can offer you, methinks.

	that he was most likely asking for advice about how to weigh those two options. That is, he wants to know about the value of OS X. If I were you, Mr. Johnson, I would wait until the Jaguar revision of OS X to be released before making any final decisions. Of course, a dual G4 system with 1.5 GB of RAM probably wouldn't have performance problems with any OS, but still--you might decide that $11,000 is a little bit too much to spend. I certainly would.

	This upgrade to OSex would be money well spent the price for apple component are high but the high quality and ease of use lead to a lower total cost of ownership. you could save money by using exisiting PC monitors for the display instead of LCD's or whatever apple sells now days. no more BSOD (Black screen of death)

	Using Mac OS 9 is like buying season tickets and then not being allowed to leave the stadium until the end of the season. The ability to multitask will make you happier than you can imagine. If money is your only concern, take (other anonymous reader)'s advice and get cheap monitors. That is, unless you mind your eyes dying the death of a thousand needles from the pain of looking at inferior monitors.

	... I've never seen a mac in my life I know monthing about it and its OS's I m european and I dont know how much it really costs in Euro currency... The reason I vote "yes" is that I ve seen the supersonics and they suck! I ve also taken many women to dinner and it sucks even more! (if dinner leads to sex ask politely if you can have plain sex) Conclusively the mac can't be worse so it's money well spent...

	If you read through some of my comment history you'll realize that I was taken in by the Loonix propaganda. Thing is though, the thousand dollar computer is plenty for the average person that wants to type documents, listen to music, chat with friends, check email, and surf the internet. Now certainly there comes a time in everybody's life when the need for quality surpasses price but I guess I never really applied that philosophy to personal computers. I've never really seen the need to. Granted it's been a while since I checked up on computer prices, especially top of the line computers, but yeah, I had some sticker shock seeing that $11,000 price tag.

	He doesn't realize how idiotic the question in the article is or his post. Should I switch to a completely new computing platform? Let make my decision on the most expensive thing I can find (a system obviously far too advanced for him) and then bitch about the cost. Go away or I will replace you with a very small shell script.

	You don't necessarily need a fully stocked G4, Apple machinery is much more efficient than it's PC counterpart, I don't quite see why one would need 1.5 gig of ram to start, or whatnot. But in any case, these's not reason to spend $11,000 in one shit (albeit, for a dual 1 ghz G4 system on OSX, it would be quite worth it.) you can just get the upgrades when you need them. I've got myself that same system, without all the extra toys for about +/- $3500 - 4000 Canadian funds, (which is what? $14 USD? with the current exchange rate?). It's great. and I can get upgrades when and if i need them, saved allot oh money that way. then again, it all depends on what you intend to use your comouter for. Unless you're in the design field, you're better off purchasing a PC for a fraction of the price.

	What will you be doing with your new mac? That is really the question that needs asking. Whenever anyone asks me questions about what to buy, I don't say "buy this or that" i say "what will you be using it for?" Don't spend more that you think you will need/want. <P> I don't like the prices apple slaps on thier products.. I understand that is how they make money, the problem is they over charge for the parts, one place i worked at ordered a 6 gig harddrive for an older imac and it cost them 300 dollars for it. Now if they wanted to they could have ordered a nice maxtor or seagate harddrive, it would have worked just as well, lasted just as long and cost them 100+ dollar less than the apple disk. Apple is like the nike of the computer world.. uses the same parts as everyone else, costs twice as much and being a big name brand doesn't make it better. 	I currently own Mac OS X on my computer and I can hold it over all my PC friends that I own one of the best operating systems on the planet. It hardly ever crashes on programs, and it is almost impossible to crash the entire system. Also, the iPod is compatible with iTunes, which, if you like music, is a must-have. However, you don't need a new G4 to run it; I actually have a G3 and it runs just fine, albeit slightly slower than a G4 would. I say get it, but don't get the new computer unless you really need one. -------------------------------------------------------------------------If ignorance is bliss, then knock the smile off my face.

	You know full well you don't have to pay 11k for the "Mac OS X experience." Mac OS X costs $129.00 US. It can be run on most Apple (and Mac-compatible) hardware made since ~August, 1995. For "decent" performance under Mac OS X, you can buy any system released since mid-2000. RAM matters the most, keep in mind. What the Hell do you need 160 gigs of drive space for? That's jacking the price up the most on your "dream" system. Getting a bit obsessive with your Richard Simmons porn collection, are we?
