Does anybody else notice the obvious non-English influences on "leet speek"?

Any linguist even moderately qualified to comment care to do so? This is very interesting to me, especially in light of the linguistic autochthony[1] of America.

[1] Do I get bonus points? :)

He wrote a lot on generative phonology but isn't qualified to comment on the recent mutation that is leet-speak. Find someone more contemporary.

For what it's worth, the most interesting thing about it is its existence as an almost purely written form. It has a spoken aspect but is unique in that it didn't begin that way.

Um, it's a Saturday (5.00 / 3) (#6)
by zikzak on Sat Jun 1st, 2002 at 03:42:52 PM PST
It's the weekend. Where do you think we are? Unlike the typical computer dweeb teen who has locked themself in basement so they can masturbate furiously to net porn without interruption, the Adequacy staff is out enjoying a relaxing Saturday afternoon.

Elby is playing disc golf.
Elenchos & Poltroon are having a picnic in the park.
bc is in the garage working on his muscle car.
RobotSlave is out of town visiting family.
Shoeboy and chloedancer are berbecuing with friends.
dmg is enthusiatically attending Golden Jubilee festivities.
Adam Rightman is attending Mass.
iat is in a darkened pub trying to pick up women.
Perdida is in a nearby National Forest, spiking trees.
cp is at the mall hoping to find a good sale on off-season leather jackets.
jsm is in the Hamptons hob-knobbing with people the likes of which you and I will never meet.
Seventypercent is doing a fundraiser for the NRA.
em is risking arrest by participating in a Critical Mass ride.
And osm is most likely at home, watching Leon for the 2,975th time.

As for my presence, unfortunately I drew the short straw this week, so I am forced to check up on the site from time to time and make sure no havoc is underway. However, I can perform this duty from the local swank coffee shop whilst chatting with area artisans, so it's not too onerous a duty.

these "Golden Jubilee festivities" that dmg is attending would be ones located in America, and not, for example, Britain, what with dmg only being "30 miles from his apartment". It's not quite far enough to stretch "across the pond" to places like London, where the best Golden Jubilee festivities are taking place.

It's nice to see Americans such as dmg celebrating our Queen, even though they don't seem to give a shit about the World Cup.

An American's view of the World Cup. (none / 0) (#8)
by First Incision on Sat Jun 1st, 2002 at 06:44:06 PM PST
The World Cup is being played in Japan and Korea.

I know France won last time.

I am aware that France was beaten by Senegal. I think this is cool because American's don't like the French.

The US team plays sometime this week. I will probably hear if they won, and note it with muted interest.

This is my American awareness of the World Cup.

A Scotsman's view of England at the moment. (none / 0) (#9)

Every second car has a St George's Cross flag flying from it. Not the Union Jack (which you'd be waving at the Queen on Monday), but the England flag.

The pop charts are full of World Cup songs.

Every shop is selling hats, towels, flags, t-shirts etc with the St George's Cross. And the ubiquitous "England 5 Germany 1" t-shirt.

All the newspapers have a World Cup story on the front page. No, not the sports section. The front page.

All TV channels bombard you with details of their World Cup coverage.

I have already seen 5 grown men with the St George's Cross shaven into their skinhead haircuts.

Young children (and a few men) are having their face painted with the St George's Cross.

The main topic of discussion at the office is sorting out the logistics of watching all the various England matches, and of course ribbing the various French workmates.

In short, there's not a better time to leave for a country that doesn't give a flying fuck about the World Cup.
