The Internet - where is it heading?

Many people have calculated that Open Source software will eventually overtake Commercial software. Noone knows when this will happen but it is inevitable and will bring about huge benefits to the internet and society.

The first benefit will be that security on the internet will no longer be the problem it was when buggy commercial software existed. People will feel safe using credit cards online and sending personal details to total strangers. In short people will have *confidence* in the internet.

The internet future will be very different from today. Children will use the internet to learn instead of having teachers, adults will use it for all communication and spend hours online for work and pleasure activities. The porn industry will become the largest sector of the economy. That maybe not a good thing but im just saying what is going to happen based on trends and stuff.

I can see that by 2020 we will all have cars connected to the internet that can drive themselves using online maps.

Also actual people will be connected to the internet so that at work, they can be told what task to do next by a super server. This would be amazingly efficient.

Shopping malls will become a thing of the past as the ecommerce takes over. People will try clothes on in a "virtual" shop.

In fact people will be able to stay at home all the time - never leaving their house for years on end. Food and suchlike can be delivered by automatic trucks (using the online map thing).

Lots of robots will do all the work while people can relax and do other stuff. Music and Video will all be streamed to implants in our heads. That will probably come a lot later - say 2030.

Everyone will be happy - well most people. I guess some people won't be. But they're just being awkward.

Anyway thats what I think the internet will be like soon. Note that it might not be exactly like that but I did lots of researching to find out stuff so I expect it to be very similar.

	Im making a clear and precise point: The internet will not florish until patents, copyright and the like are eradicated. Yes the first part of the diary does take a dig at commercial software. But what did you expect from me? Then I made some reasonable suggestions about how such a future internet will shape our lives. I tried to be factual and informal while adding line about how I think people will feel towards this new internet. I mentioned most people will be happy and a small minority wont. 	Brilliant diary entry, sir. I suggest you invent a time machine post-haste, and warp back to 1996, and publish this article in a major newsmagazine such as 'Time' or 'Newsweek'. Investors will clamor over small Internet startups and the Internet will mushroom from a dead blade of grass to a huge vineyard. However, I also forsee a dark future - one where the liberal groups gain considerable influence.

	That's right. I invested in a few choice dot-coms and made quite a bit of money. Some went under while others (like eBay) survived. Fortunately, I got in, made a bundle, and got out almost 6 months before the first round of major collapses. Oh well I got quite a bit out of it. I got a brand new car (something practical this time). My insurance (car, house, life, etc.) are all paid off. I still have a nice credit that should last the next three+ years. I bought 2 additional properties which I rent out. There's a nice credit on my broadband internet service (should last another 5+ years). The expansion on my house is done and paid for. Not to mention I'm left with a hefty chunk of change to fuck around with. Go away or I will replace you with a very small shell script.

	Did you figure out this future using Tarot cards, astrology, tea leaves, palmistry, a crystal ball, chicken entrails, the I Ching, a Magic 8 Ball, or a huge load of Fortune Cookies? 	The only thing I want out of technology is less physical exertion, and tastier food. Now that the spork of the 21th century has been created in the Segway, I can look forward to never having to walk ever again. All my stairs are currently being turned into ramps, and I will be sueing my employer to do the same. As for the tastier food, McDonald's ingenius gravy offering for their fries will suffice for now. That is of course, until we can eat babies without the fear of big brother punishing us. --You seem to be suffering from a liberal-arts education.
