The recent "Mandrake Linux" story is just more proof of it. I mean, you need to be a special kind of idiot to post 100+ identical messages detailing factual errors in the article. What, are these people truly that dense? I'm shocked and horrified. It's truly a horrible day for the human race. *sigh*

Not a very prudent thing to say (none / 0) (#1)
by Anonymous Reader on Sun Sep 30th, 2001 at 10:13:14 PM PST
First of all, not all 100+ posts point out errors in the article (although I must admit, there were a lot and it was a poorly-researched article.)

Secondly, we "Software Geeks" are responsible for virtually every aspect of your computing lives. Without the help of countless geeks Adequacy.org would simply not exist. You would not be able to read this post, now would I be able to write it.

Thirdly, the linux community has been fighting for years to gain credibility with the rest of the world. They've made many strides, but still have a long way to go, as this article demonstrates. Perhaps the general outcry wouldn't be so vocal if we were given an accurate review. Isn't that what you people are all about? Adequacy?

Fourthly, to compound the problem, there is so much misinformation floating around, that when somebody tries to clarify a point, they are assailed by several others arguing (sometime ad-homonim) that they are "full of crap."

I am a firm believer in the free exchange of ideas and beliefs. The internet (and forums such as adequacy.org) facilitate that exchange. But I also believe in journalistic accuracy, which today was not exercised at all.

But do really have to be such an idiot while you're doing this? Do you have any idea how dense and childish you look?

(For the record, I am not the original AC from parent post.)

The original article looks equally dense and childish to us geeks. Seriously. I will try to be even and fair in my reply here, but try to meet me halfway. If I posted a review of the newest Polaroid camera to a website and I said that it SUCKED because Kodak 35mm film would not work with it, surely you would think that I am a big buffoon! That is why the geeks came down so hard on this guy. He got basic concepts wrong.

There's no big shame in getting something wrong. But, a lot of your regular readers came to his defense and used their misinformation to argue with. Then the geeks are accused of just being linux zealots. Now, how much actually consideration did you even give any of the linux users?

Personally, this site appeals to me in the sense that I want to read "news for grown-ups". But, you have to admit: news indicates facts. Clearly, there were some factual errors in the original story.

Article is dense and childish? (none / 0) (#15)
by baberg on Mon Oct 1st, 2001 at 10:30:39 AM PST
I thought that the article in question was incredibly intelligent and witty. I have no problem with reading a person's opinion and not judging that person by it. After all, as the Holy Book says, "Judge not, lest ye be judged." Just because the writer expresses an opinion that is contrary to your preconceived notions of right and wrong does not mean that you can lash out in a verbal assault against him.

Perhaps some of his facts were in error. Perhaps he should have done more research. But is it right for you geeks to berate him and point out every flaw in his argument, just because you disagree with the premise? Imagine this; Let's say a pro-Linux article was on the front page, but with factual errors. Do you honestly think that the pro-Linux crowd would react so vehemently? I don't think so.

Think about the person on the other end of this flame war. And remember what the Good Book says: "Love thy friend as you love your neighbor".

I wonder how many Linux propellerheads went and created accounts solely for the purpose of twisting the discussion to their own ends by rating comments, without actually adding to the discussion. Everybody knows Scoop's ratings are meaningless; this sort of behavior is pointless dick-waving certainly not acceptable on a site made for Grown-Ups.

When I first read the Mandrake article, I honestly thought it was a joke. It would have to be the most factually incorrect article I have ever read.

It's not us "software geeks" who looked dense - it was the people who were trying to defend the author, but had absolutely no idea what they were talking about. If you don't know what you are talking about, don't say anything at all. It's as simple as that!

You have now most definitively shown that you don't just act foolish, but you are foolish. It is, indeed, you "software g**ks" who not only look dense, but are dense. You still don't get it, and apparently never will.

I suggest you take your own advice, and shut your yap now, before you say enough that you realize what a dense, unsubtle child you are. We wouldn't want you to break your streak on our account.

I've gotta say that it pretty much mirrors my experience with lenix red hat, and the rudeness I got when I asked for advice on slashdot.

Does anybody know where all these people are coming from? Obviously we've been linked from somewhere...

Please don't hold all geeks responsible for the actions of the vocal minority. I'm sure you know that in any large group there are bound to be a few extremists who give the whole group a bad name. (Just look at the Islamic terrorists.)

I happen to be a software geek myself, but don't hate me for it. I (along with most of the geeks I know) doen't fit into the typical stereotype that these extremists seem to want to maintain. In fact, I even have a social life!

I perused a bit of the comments before being sickened by the linux fanatics. I've used linux myself and like it a bit, but I still use Windows at home, it's just a better choice hands down. It's true that there were quite a few errors in the article, but they were for the most part completely irrelevant. (How many people bitched and moaned because the guy got Linus's name off by one letter. GET A LIFE!)

I did find it funny, though, to finally hear from all the anonymous cowards who clog the 'Who's Online' list. There's nearly always at least a hundred of them compared to about 20 or so registered users.

As a child I wanted to know everything. Now I miss my ignorance.

I was one of the "Linux fanatics" who ventured to your site from the Newsforge link.

I, however, wouldn't consider myself a fanatic. I use the operating system on one of my two computers at home as a router/firewall, web server and for email. On my other computer I use Windows 2000 and I have used it since it was realeased. I respect it as Microsoft's most stable and usable desktop OS to date. I readily admit the Linux is not ready for general desktop use. I view it as a niche OS suited to server operations and desktop use to individuals looking to expand their computer knowledge.

I urge all adequacy.org readers to review my comment on the aforementioned Mandrake "review". I posted as an anonymosu use Do I really make myself look like "childish" and "idiotic". I aimed to post a level headed response pointing out that the article was wrong on almost every point. If any of you disagree with my analysis, tell me. The only response I got to the original post was a rebuttal to one of the least important, almost unrelated points I made.

I completely understand that people are entitled to their own opinion. But a public review, such as the one posted, is supposed to present facts and ones reactions to those facts. The review miserably failed in it's attempt to present facts. As I illustrated in my post, almost every point brought against Linux was flawed.

I did have preconceived notions concerning this article. From the post on NewForge, I expected a negative review of Mandrake. A negative review would not be anything new, becuase I readily admit that Linux is not ready for the average consumer's desktop.

I was shocked with the lack of regard for the truth about the OS in the review. The "reviewer" even admitted that he never got around to installing the OS. Upon reading the article, I was appalled that such trash, masquearading as a review, was posted to a news site. A news site that proclaims their attention to "pure, unadulterated, verified facts". That may be so in other cases, but that article was a definite blow to this site's integrity.

A sentence in my above post went uncorrected (I'm at work, so you'll have to cut me some slack). I was saying that I posted anonymously becuase I have no account here. I don't intend to make one because I don't believe that my stay here will be very long.

I do however, sign each post with my name and e-mail address, so finding my post should be no problem. IE users just press CTRL-F (or click "Edit"->"Find..." if you prefer) and search for "chuckx". You'll find my posts quickly that way.

I would have to admit I am guilty of taking it seriously.

The first time I read through it I did think it was a joke, but the comments changed my mind about that.

Good one. I might come here on a regular basis.
