The world has been going to hell in a handbasket in a long, long time; however, this time around, this seems to be the "real-thing", not a fire drill. With the rampant terrorism, atheism, idiotism, libralism, Prozac and other narcotics -- we seem to have finally figured out how to efficiently kill ourselves without causing pain and inconvenience.

So, how long do we have?!

But, that is exactly my point. This time around we are actually getting somewhere in this "world-ending" business.

SO, what else is new? (none / 0) (#17)
by em on Mon Nov 5th, 2001 at 02:24:39 PM PST
The mere assumption that the world has an end leads to the probability of any claim that the world will end soon to become higher and higher as time passes, regardless of when the world actually ends. So, your statement is completely uninformative.

I'll waste no time explaining patiently to you that "the end of the world" is no more fun for Christians than for the rest of you. True, Christians might be more prepared for it, but that doesn't mean they made it happen. (Sigh. Atheists have zero critical thinking skills. Don't keep your mind too open, stuff happens to fall out of it. Just look at our atheist friends.)

Reports of the coming of the end of the world... (none / 0) (#7)
by FreemoreJohnson on Sat Nov 3rd, 2001 at 11:31:16 AM PST
. . .have been highly exaggerated.

You assert that this is the real-deal... but I don't see why. There have been wars and tragedy forever. Why is this different?

The stuff going on now is just play-acting, though. Which is why the world might end, because nobody takes anything seriously anymore.

by FreemoreJohnson on Sat Nov 3rd, 2001 at 12:26:56 PM PST
yeah, you're right, in a sort of "Dr. Strangelove" way.

People trivialize and romanticize tragedy. But is it new? And if it isn't new, why is this round more serious than the last couple thousand?

Being a True Christian (Pre-Trib Protestant, as described in the "Left Behind" series of books and movie), I can guarentee you one thing: I am still here, so it isn't happening yet.

When I get beamed up off to Heaven, I'll let you know so you can start worrying about your eternal soul and start preparing for the death and destruction of the Tribulation.

That's nice of you, thanks very much. But what's with the plug for the crazy books?

True Christianity (5.00 / 2) (#12)
by nx01 on Sat Nov 3rd, 2001 at 01:11:49 PM PST
In the United States, Christianity is not just a religion -- it is a way of life. For instance, there are Christian Coffee Houses, Christian Rock, Christian Movies, and even Christian marital aids. American Christianity is more than a religion, it's an industry -- a tribute to the capitalism.

To be a Christian without buying into the Christian Culture would nearly be sacrilege. Thus, I felt it my duty to point you towards some resources you could buy to get a feel for me.

I will be praying for you.

I live in the United States, and you're right, some forms of Christianity are clearly industries. I know you didn't argue it was unique, but I ought to just note that the Roman Catholic Church was an industry a lot earlier.

BTW, the Christian marital aids site is funny, and I don't consider myself uptight... but... A frigging baby jesus buttplug? :) For christ's sake!

are you talking about global warming? (none / 0) (#15)
by philipm on Sun Nov 4th, 2001 at 05:53:54 AM PST
The real killer is global warming.
People sarcastically say that the only way to solve the global warming problem is to kill everyone, but even that will not work!

The only way to kill all human beings is with nuclear weapons, and doing so will only make global warming worse. We are screwed!

Actually, no. (none / 0) (#16)
by tkatchev on Sun Nov 4th, 2001 at 07:14:19 AM PST
Using mass nuclear weapons would probably cause nuclear winter. I'm not sure how that would counteract with global warming, though. Maybe the two will cancel each other out, and the birds and the bees will finally live in peace and harmony...
