Update 29-11-2001

I'd normally post a diary, but K5 seems down at the moment. Any K5 people wanting to meet Inoshiro and who live in Seattle or San Francisco will get a bit of a chance to see me on the 13th and 18th of December. I'll be flying through on the way to a bit of a family re-union (seeing dad for the first time in 8 years).

(Emphasis is mine.)

My God. I think comments are unnecessary. I think this is the time for all of you to stop for a second and reflect.

Maybe I don't get it. (none / 0) (#1)
by Hagbard Celine on Fri Nov 30th, 2001 at 01:07:52 PM PST
I came here before I ever had heard of or seen K5. The biggest problem there that I saw was that they weren't nearly as funny most Adequacy posts. Is that why everyone here hates it?

So, K5 is run by someone who hasn't seen their father in 8 years? I haven't seen mine in 1. What the hell does that mean?

I sure do. Is that somehow relevant to the discussion at hand? For fairness, do you have a goal in life?

You don't get it. You are not adequate. No offense, but I don't feel like there is much point in discussing this with you...

None of us are adequate. Hmm...I wonder if I take this site (or anything posted on this site) seriously. Is that air you're breathing?

Apparently, you are the one taking life too seriously. Nothing is without divine inspiration, especially things on the fringe of reality.

K5 isn't a humor site (none / 0) (#6)
by fluffy grue on Fri Nov 30th, 2001 at 01:26:41 PM PST
K5 is a news and discussion site. Adequacy is sort of a parody of it, and the world in general. There's very little on Adequacy which you can take seriously, including the supposed "we're better than K5" thing (particularly since many of the more-visible Adequacy readers and contributors are also very visible K5 readers and contributors).

Also, Adequacy runs on a modified version of Scoop, which is Kuro5hin's weblog software (that is, Kuro5hin is to Scoop as Slashdot is to Slash).

Aq a parody of k5?!? (none / 0) (#10)
by Anonymous Reader on Fri Nov 30th, 2001 at 01:37:04 PM PST
Ugh. I mean, ugh.

Most people on aq have nothing to do with k5, and that includes the editors. A small minority may appear obsessed, but there is little crossover.

I always thought this was a parody of k5. Or was it the other way around?

Aq isn't a parody of anything. It is unique in its own very special way.

Pop quiz: how many aq editors are on #kuro5hin right now?

How many adequacy editors regularly post to adequacy? In fact, how many of them posted in the last three months?

Methinks this site is due to a good old-fashioned communist-style management purging.

How many adequacy editors regularly post to adequacy? In fact, how many of them posted in the last three months?

My account has been disabled for the past month (between October 28th and November 28th) as punishment for recklessly endangering Adequacy by publishing an article which offended Linux hackers. As a result of this article, several members of the Adequacy editorial team received death threats and numerous attempts were made to hack our server. It was decided that my account should be disabled, to encourage me not to post things that may cause harm to the site.

Fortunately, I have now served my punishment and my account has been reinstated for the past couple of days. However, many other Adequacy editors are still being punished for previous misdemeanours (including attempting to DoS the site or speaking out against The Powers That Be) and so at any point in time it's common for only a small number of editorial accounts to be active. This explains the small number of posts made by Adequacy editors.

by Anonymous Reader on Fri Nov 30th, 2001 at 01:55:28 PM PST
Right now, there is one adequacy editor in #kuro5hin, though he doesn't appear to be active in there. Sometimes, there can be as many as two (!).

The community that founded adequacy predates the existance of kuro5hin by some time. It has been writing in its unique style for some time longer than k5 has existed too. That we use scoop is really incidental, we could use any other weblog software, or change in the future.

Seeing as you are confusing technology and culture, you must be a k5er.

"Technology and Culture from the Trenches".

Although, methinks the kuro5hin community doesn't have a clear grasp of what the word "trenches" actually involves. Here in Europe, it instills an irrational fear into people, sort of like the word "camp". It is not an accident that people say that "there are no atheists in trenches under fire".

What? (none / 0) (#28)
by Dolgan on Sat Dec 1st, 2001 at 07:22:55 AM PST
Kuro5hin was founded in December 1999. Unless my memory is a year off, which it very well may be, the community that founded Adequacy didn't really organize in any respectable fashion to speak of until 2000.

by fluffy grue on Fri Nov 30th, 2001 at 11:11:04 PM PST
By K5 I meant the K5 culture and not the website itself; I suppose I should have said something more like "Slashdot, K5, and other similarly hive-minded weblogs where people have a massive self-congratulatory circlejerk for talking out their asses about things they have no understanding about."

My apologies; I meant no offense.

You were right before. (5.00 / 1) (#27)
by theboz on Sat Dec 1st, 2001 at 06:53:55 AM PST
I agree with what you were saying before. Adequacy is in some ways a parody of K5, but it is also different. So, you were not completely off base before, but the person you replied to just wanted to vent frustration like a sad little child.

Of course, had they wanted to insult you, they could have done much better. I'll give an example below:

Your mind is as limp as the foreskin of a toddler. Your lack of thought can not be matched, unless one were to look for intelligent conversation in a morgue. The things you express on this website drive men to the brink of suicide, yet it gives them hope that the idiocy in your words can never be exceeded, until they read your next post. I feel dirty to have ever communicated with you in any way, so now I must go and burn off every hair of my body and bathe in bleach just to get the stench of your stupidity removed from my presence.

I didn't even break out the Sunday words there but I think those types of comments are what adequacy needs right now. I think we've all had enough of being apologetic or having these worthless conversations about subjects that everyone is already deeply entrenched in their opinions. I say bring on the confrontations and try to shake people from their mundane paths in life.
