OK, now I know most of you could probably care less about this, but I personally find this rather irritating.

So I go into a channel on the undernet, #arizona, and I'm idling, right? So out of the blue, someone decides to insult me. For no reason. I wish people weren't bigger assholes than me.

just had a word with the guy. apparently, he based his opinions on the 5 previous sentences (small nonsensical comments) I'd made in the channel (as replies to other folks' comments) over a 2 hour period.

it makes me feel so warm inside to know that people can be so utterly vacuous and shallow when it comes to dealing with others.

on the plus side, it does give me another excuse to be anti-social.

how as a freshman, back in high school, people would actually come up to me in the library while I was doing my homework and punch me in the back of the head. for no reason whatsoever. completely unprovoked. or they would snatch up my backpack, dump the contents all over the floor, and they would laugh, like it was the funniest thing in the world.

why do assholes seem to gravitate towards me? do I seem to have an attitude that just says "victimize me"? bah... >:(

and people wonder why I'm so depressed/touchy over things...

Think of it this way. If people didn't torment you in high school, you would have no material for your upcoming bestseller, your kickass TV show, your blockbuster feature film, or adequacy.

You ARE writing your bestseller and your film and TV scripts, right?

Alternatively, if people didn't tease the crap out of you in high school, where would your motivation to succeed come from? Don't you want to go back to your reunion in 10 years and laugh in the faces of those poorer, less successful, already twice-divorced losers who biffed you in the head freshman year? Otherwise, you'd have to get your motivation from somewhere else, which is much harder.

And, let's face it, people are assholes because they can be. Didn't you ever see (uh-oh, dating myself) "Heathers"?

Anyway, my advice (for what it's worth) is to channel all this energy you have into incredibly lucrative and fulfilling creative endeavors. And at least one good adequacy article that we can all have a shot at. Good luck, my friend.

Probably your parents fault. (none / 0) (#25)
by Anonymous Reader on Mon Oct 29th, 2001 at 07:42:45 PM PST
Did your parents teach you that violence and fighting was wrong ? And to ignore the bullies ?

What you should have done was strike back with devastating force the first time anyone picked on you. They would then have gone on to look for a weaker target. Which solves the problem for you, but not for society.

And to be honest, kids are basically savages and the law of the jungle prevails.

I'm working on something... (none / 0) (#7)
by Frithiof on Sun Oct 28th, 2001 at 11:27:00 PM PST
I just have to make sure it's consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church.

On an unrelated note, is it just me, or am I the only one who finds something disturbing about the way children find themselves fit to harass and disrupt the lives of those who do not fit their limited concept of 'normalcy'? I'm sure that the people who picked on me in high school assumed a number of things about me; I wasn't a social-butterfly, so I must have been retarded, I didn't speak much, so I must not have been able to understand english, and I didn't strike back at people when they hit me, so I must have been weak and uncoordinated. Of course, they could've just been picking on me in order to get a reaction out of me, but it still didn't do much for my self-esteem, which is currently in shambles.

I sometimes wonder whether humans are inherently good, and make bad decisions out of ignorance, or whether people are inherently wicked, and only do good things when pressured to do so.

This topic cries out for coverage. (none / 0) (#10)
by elenchos on Mon Oct 29th, 2001 at 12:24:02 AM PST
Why hasn't anyone written anything about the plight of non-social-butterflies? I've often suspected that it is true that there are some kids who get picked on more than other kids. You have to be paying attention to detect this pattern, but I really think it's there. While certain types hardly get an crap at all, this other minority seems to get more than their fair share.

My theory is that this minoity is indeed percieved as "different" in some way. But WHAT way? Huh? And what's it like to be one of those kids? I've sometimes thought that it could even leave some sort of emotional scars, you know?

I know I'm just speculating here and that's why some data needs to be collected. Are there any others like you? Maybe a series of articles could be written soliciting their input. We could gather together many such experiences and share them. I think it would be a very, very healthy and productive exercise.

What's missing is a web log that has the courage to do it. It's new ground, uncharted territory. Who will go first?

I say ADEQUACY.ORG should do it! Are you with me?

I'm not really sure whether this is bait or not, but it's certainly a tempting idea.

The only problem is that since I'm not a social-butterfly, I haven't exactly encountered too many folks like me; perhaps some of them, upon reading this, will feel compelled to write me a letter and tell me about their experiences (frithiof@bsdmail.com) so that I (or a number of people) can write a few articles about this. While I'm sure there are more important things that *could* be discussed, I think the human aspect of this might draw in more readers (of the repressed geek variety).

Yes, it's bait. (none / 0) (#12)
by elenchos on Mon Oct 29th, 2001 at 01:21:07 AM PST
I'm trying to trick you into soliciting stories about being socially ostracized for being "different". My motivation for setting this trap is because I think the topic is under-reported, and now is an opportunity to break it wide open.

You're right that there is a problem of isolation. These are the very people who don't network, so they need an unconventional means of discovering each other. What means? The internet!

What part of the internet? The Adequacy.org part!

Darn, you caught me. I would have worked too. Hundreds would have posted their own hellish experiences in reply to yours. It would have been huge. Sigh.

But in my case, I don't need them. I have authority. People believe me just because of the name elenchos®. It's a branding thing.

The word count doesn't matter. It just has to be good. Write 3000 words, then edit it down to the very best 1500. That would be a good piece of writing.

In my small school (none / 0) (#16)
by error27 on Mon Oct 29th, 2001 at 04:28:08 AM PST
I was in a class of 9 and sometimes I was the person who was picked on.

But mostly it was this other guy who we picked on. We called him "doa-gees." We thought we were so darned witty. :)

I should feel really quilty for picking on him but the truth is that the masses demand a scape-goat. If it wasn't him being picked on it might have been me. Far better he than I.

That has been my rule throughout life and it has served me well. If I met Frithiof on IRC I would say something like, "Ha Ha! You are so dumb and uggly! You are a wussie Mac/Windows/Linux user! Har Har Har."

Then I would kick-ban him. Sorry Frith but it's a tough world and I have to look out for my own skin.

This is a view worth considering. (none / 0) (#17)
by elenchos on Mon Oct 29th, 2001 at 04:44:47 AM PST
Just how valuable is a scape-goat to a society? Perhaps no healthy society can do without a minority class that suffers at the hands of the rest. Maybe their cruelty is best channeled in a stable direction. Maybe those chosen to suffer would be even worse off if they lacked the role, wretched though it is, that they are given in life.

Perhaps you are doing the "nerds" and "dweebs" a favor by knocking them around. Who would want them at all if they didn't have that use?

Excellent points, all. This should for sure be investigated at length.

I think that it is a bad experience for them to be kicked around. If they weren't beaten up every day, they would probably be happier.

But in this case the needs of the many supersedes the needs of the few.

It would be nice to imagine that the few didn't have any needs but that's a dishonest approach. The few have needs as well. But *shrug* that's just the way it goes. You can't always get what you need.

I wonder why so many scholars bothered writing things like the Torahs, the New Testament, and other religious texts that try to discourage people from treating their neighbors like shit. It's really something to think about.

The Torah sez... (none / 0) (#27)
by elenchos on Mon Oct 29th, 2001 at 08:22:33 PM PST
...Kill your unclean infidel neighbors. Kill the men, then go and kill all the women, and all children. Then, once you've done that, kill all their animals and burn their crops too. Salt the earth they trod and leave no stone atop another in their cities.

Where do you get all this crap about being nice? That only applies to your close relatives and members of your tribe or sect. Even those below your social class don't deserve much beyond letting them pick clean the leftovers of your harvested fields. Clearly, scripture gives us an excellent model for abusing those who are "differnet." (Your side also has support in the Torah too, but I'll let you try to guess where it is before I tell you. How come Christians care so little to learn about their own supposedly important religion?)

Which Torah are you reading? And don't get me started on the New Testament...

I'm sure a few of them did... (none / 0) (#21)
by Frithiof on Mon Oct 29th, 2001 at 02:35:27 PM PST
but *why* do people do this? and how were they to know that I wouldn't get pissed off one day, bring a bunch of guns to school, and start killing people?

I'm quite sure that just about all of the kids who did things like that were picked on continuously and in a rather brutal manner... and for what reason, really? To satisfy some loser's low self-esteem? For laughs? To gain popularity in a group that thrives on destroying that which is, to them, weak? (I can't help but wonder if these are the same people who rape girls when they've had one too many beers). Perhaps I am missing something here... all the reasons given here to explain away their actions are no real reasons at all. You might as well say that I ought to push some kid in the mud because it's funny, or that I should take advantage of a girl because she's drunk and can't fend for herself properly. More or less, you're saying that I should ruin someone else's life simply because I can.

Whether or not elenchos was 'trolling' my post, looking for attention, I still think this would make for a fairly interesting topic of discussion in an article. The voices of the oppressed must be heard!

to be honest, I just haven't seen too many articles on popular websites such as Adequacy, /., or Kuro5hin discussing the plight of the perpetually ridiculed (I've seen a few on the SomethingAwful forums, but that's something else).
