For some reason this reminds me of the myth of Charles H. Duell, U.S. Commissioner of Patents, in 1899, who is alleged to have said "everything that can be invented has been invented" when he advocated closing the patent office.

I disagree that the anti-trolls have won. I put the case that the trolls have won, since the aim in the first place was "education through misinformation".

Having said that, there have not been too many brilliant trolls on teh slashduh lately.

I confess I used to enjoy reading the good trolls from the good old days of trolltalk, 10gramspoppylatex and k22320inchfan somehow the goings on at sid=20721 seem like a poor facsimile.

What do others think ? Is trolling dead ?

ful, in that other weblogs have seen how an aggressive anti-troll philosophy, like ours, can result in a board that's nearly troll free.

MEEPT was great. MEEPT referred to himself in the third person. MEEPT made up songs about slashdot articles. MEEPT's posts were hilarious. Then MEEPT died in a Richard Stevens double suicide.

I assume you are referring to this comment. I was playing a bit of devil's advocate there to show the folly of Mr. Gohomeandshoveit's logic. He was asking stupid questions, and I was providing stupid answers. Maybe mine was a false hope, but I was hoping he might see his mistakes.

You asked me a direct question, and I shall answer it. If I am to believe what I have been told, the US military dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

from when the adequacy editors ran slashdot.

We don't have a mod-point farm for one. looking back at some of the more successful trolls from the likes of LAT and KTB - a significant number of posts exclaim "how did this get 5 Insightful!!"

Slashdot has a few good trolls around - jcg's accounts are worth monitoring. wcb doesn't seem active currently, although he has had some good outings a month back. I find PG and tps12 rather amusing, although they are currently crippled with the two-post-a-day limit slashdot imposes on them. sorry to anyone i left out.

I'd really like to see a week of quality trolling. it seems that adequacy's editors have moved on from slashdot - but perhaps they might think of doing a Monday to Friday spree where you show slashdot who is in charge. Bring some of those accounts out of retirement!

    How does next week sound?

    Depends on who you ask. (5.00 / 2) (#12)
by RobotSlave on Thu Aug 22nd, 2002 at 02:20:46 PM PST
Well, if you ask the envirobots, the decline in anything will always be due to Man's Decimation Of Mother Nature. In this case, they tend to blame the commercial fisheries.

The commercial fisheries, for their part, tend to blame trade agreements for the decline in stocks, and concomitant decline the yields of long-line and other types of harvest.

    Governments, predictably, blame other governments.

    Everyone blames the Japanese.

Personally, I think the dramatic increase in aquaculture in the past decade is the root cause. Sometimes it seems like every last piece of king salmon purchased in the lower 48 these days was farm-raised in Vancouver, doesn't it?

I think when dmg referred to 'trolling' he was talking about the abominable and abhorrent practice whereby an individual, seeking attention, posts an inflammatory or insincere message to a public bulletin board or forum on the Internet, hoping to elicit responses from misguided people who believe he means what he says.

This practice is very common at such forums as masturbating-liberalists.org and basement-dwelling-homos.org

Its a question of context you see.

    Don't be stupid. (5.00 / 2) (#17)
by RobotSlave on Fri Aug 23rd, 2002 at 01:14:19 AM PST
Of course it's a question of context, silly. The context here is Adequacy, and Adequacy strictly prohibits the publication of any material relating to the horrific practices you describe.

Ergo, dmg, an Editor, can not possibly mean what you think he means. Though I'll admit his phrasing is a little odd, the only thing this diary entry can possibly refer to is fishing.

by Anonymous Reader on Fri Aug 23rd, 2002 at 01:28:43 AM PST
the prohibition was against the practice in question itself, but not mentioning the practice. After all, prohibiting any mention of the practice would logically prohibit notification that the practice was prohibited.

Now say that last sentence five times fast.

We have internal guidelines, which we do not release for reasons of security. The policy is strictly enforced, and adheres at all times to the internal guideliines.

Feel free to make up your own pretend guidelines and bleat and bleat about them until you are blue in the face, but don't expect us to pay much attention to you.

...that you remove a certain notice that appears above the comment entry text box. You know, "[redacted] is not tolerated here. Any comment may be deleted by a site admin, and all [redacted] will be deleted. This is your fair warning."

Failure to do so would constitute a serious security breach, and I would be forced to notify the FBI that your site is wide open to terrorist infiltration. Judging by a certain other diary entry, I fear I may be too late.

    I despair, sometimes. (5.00 / 2) (#21)
by RobotSlave on Fri Aug 23rd, 2002 at 10:13:01 AM PST
I just told you that the policy is strictly enforced, and adheres to internal guidelines at all times.

Therefore, you colossal idiot, no part of Adequacy is in violation of the policy.

Once again, we pay no attention to your made-up imaginary pretend rules that exist only in your own head.

    This warning:
"Trolling is not tolerated here. Any comment may be deleted by a site admin, and all trolls will be deleted. This is your fair warning."
    must logically refer to fishing.

I admit it seems odd to ban fishing on a weblog, but this is your site, and you are the editors. If you were to decree that underwear were to be worn on the outside, I suppose I would have no choice but to strip down and invert my apparel order posthaste.

Thank you for clearing this up for me, kind sir. I shall endeavor to adhere as strictly to your guidelines as you yourself do.
