Decided just about an hour ago to spend a week during April 2002 in a convertible cruising U.S. Highway 1 through the Florida Keys.

Why I enjoy being a girl
I'll be departing from Florida City via the Overseas Highway -- the ultimate "blue highway" with water on both sides, 43 bridges and more than enough intriguing island detours to keep me busy for eight days and nights of aimless wandering (knowing that any normal person can drive from Miami to Key West in about 3.5 hours). It surprised me to realize today that I'd been thinking about this trip for ten years now; somehow I've always allowed life get in the way, despite my best intentions.

I'll be kicking off my next year of life celebrating the sunset with all the other eclectic souls hanging out at Mallory Square on the appropriate evening.

(My thanks to the "partner-in-crime" who reminded me that birthdays aren't always an ending; there's an equal possibility that they can serve also as a beginning, a departure, a launching pad. Thanks again for waking me up, ma cher -- who knows how long I'd have gone on somnambulating if you'd not interrupted my so-called life?)

What kind of convertible? --PJ

It's always about the car with you, (none / 0) (#2)

isn't it? Something classic would be perfect -- a pre-'69 T-bird or a pre-'67 Mustang would be idea; but I'd settle for a BMW Roadster if I can find one to rent... I realize that the car is the crucial element in this plan; hunting for it will likely be the most interesting part of the pre-trip planning.

57 Tbird would suit you (none / 0) (#3)

But so help me god, if you rent a Chrystler Sebring I'll never speak to you again.

Of course, there's much to be said for the last 4 door convertible sold in America.

Finding a '57 T-bird for this trip (none / 0) (#6)

would be the ultimate, truly (at least it wouldn't be a '66, like the one featured in Thelma and Louise...). And if you ever suggest I drive a friggin' VW Thing again, you'll be 86'd from my universe!

The word of God (5.00 / 1) (#10)
by Peter Johnson on Mon Oct 15th, 2001 at 05:36:29 PM PST
The thing is a rear engined, air cooled, convertible, German automobile.

Let's consider the following points:
  1. Engines in the rear are better than engines ith the front (though mid-engined cars are best).
  2. Air cooled motors are better than water cooled ones.
  3. German cars are better than cars made by lesser races.

So there's what the thing has going for it. I'll admit that it's not the high water mark of German engineering, but it's not a bad car.

I will NOT wreck the Mustang, Shoeboy. (none / 0) (#11)

I know you're not enamored of my driving skills, but hey, at least my car is in useable condition (unlike your VW bus). The Mustang is different from my over-insured Saturn SL2, after all, and, unlike the Saturn, I don't have a passive-aggressive relationship with Mustangs -- it's more of a loving, worshipful obsession.

Your obsession with VW Things is, I'll grudgingly admit, somewhat inspiring. But if you can love something that ugly, what possible connotations might apply to your taste in women?

I'll have you know that British cars are known for their exceptionally high quality and standards.

the decline and fall of the British auto industry (none / 0) (#13)
by loverman on Mon Oct 15th, 2001 at 11:32:13 PM PST
that may have been intended as bait, but I can't resist. let's review the record, shall we?

Austin Martin--Owned by Ford Motor Company
Bently--Owned by Volkswagen
Jaguar--Owned by Ford Motor Company
Jensen--Gone
Land Rover--Owned by Ford Motor Company
Morris Garage (MG)--Gone
Rolls Royce--Owned by BMW
Triumph--Gone

admittedly I've ommitted a few. and yes, there's still Lotus--British owned and operated. but there's the exception that proves the rule.

bottom line--"quality" and "British" rarely appear in the same sentence--unless a foreign owner is behind the scenes calling the shots.

Sad but true.

Jensen--Gone

Jensen has been reborn

Morris Garage (MG)--Gone

No, it's part of the British-owned Rover group and they're still making cars (although they're just modified Rovers)

here's still Lotus--British owned and operated

Lotus are owned by Proton, who are Malaysian.

bottom line--"quality" and "British" rarely appear in the same sentence

I would agree with that point.

There are still a few surviving British car makers though, such as Morgan, TVR and Caterham.

of the moment, based on a limited search today... Fun Wheels Rentals. I'm looking at the Mustang; they can have it waiting in Miami for me for $250. Yes, it's black with a red interior (not your favorite), but it's my transcendental road trip, after all ;)

I don't object to black with a red interior. Why would I? It's red with a black interior that I dislike.
HTH.

I'm not sure a convertable would be (none / 0) (#5)
by RobotSlave on Mon Oct 15th, 2001 at 05:11:11 PM PST
appropriate for the state of Florida, given the most recent American presidential election slash supreme court decision. I think a T-top Camaro might be more fitting. Or a soft-top Humvee. Or maybe a bulldozer.

Of course, if you are willing to abandon the "topless" idea, there would be many more options available.

I think a late 60's Jaguar E-type, converted to a hearse, as in "Harold and Maude," would be perfect. Just don't run it off a cliff.

Favorite Key West graffiti spotted on-line today:

"Free the breasts; their hearts and minds will follow."

(Second-favorite: "Rowed hard and put away wet.")

I am so looking forward to this...

I'm hoping to celebrate my birthday with: Mallory Square Entertainers Index. Maybe I'm a just a bit too old to run away and join the circus anymore, but at least I can appreciate the variety of the human parade while I'm there...
