One Year since 9/11 and Americans haven't changed

What was all the talk about America changing after September 11th? We were told repeatedly that the "world had changed forever" and that "America would no longer ignore the rest of the world". Well, like the Millenium Bug, this has been revealed as total hype.

Before 11/9, American citizens didn't think the rest of the world was relevant, 75% of Americans don't even own passports. This alone was worrying but even worse, many US politicians believed that the rest of the world only existed 20% of the time. Bush himself, president of the most polluting country on Earth, rejected the Kyoto treaty out of hand. The world had endorsed it and was begging the US to endorse it too, Bush though had other plans and simply introduced everyone in the world to his middle finger.

However, after the towers fell down, we were told that America could no longer afford to ignore the world, that it's foreign policy of self-interest first would change, events like Bush's rejection of Kyoto treaty would become a thing of the past.

Has this happened? Nope, Bush couldn't even be bothered to attend the Earth Summit last month. When just about every world leader made an effort and begged him to come, he tactically gave them his middle finger.

Bush now wants to go to war with Iraq. Now, I still haven't figured out the reason he wants to do this (the real one I mean) but fortunately I'm not alone on this one. Every democratic world leader doesn't believe the US should attack Iraq and citizens of the world are in majority opposition to the idea. But Bush decided to sort out this minor democratic problem by giving everyone the middle finger.

I admit, the middle finger is a great short term political tool but will it really prevent another Septemer 11th?

	Do you realise that the Kyoto Protocol demands that the United States reduce it's pollution levels by an inexplicable sixty-three percent? Do you have any conception of what that will do to American industry? And for what? Most environmentalists agree that fll implementation of the Kyoto Protocol will result in less than one percent reduction in global temperature. Why? Because the world's real polluters are given a free ride. No requirements have been made under Kyoto for the third world polluters of Asia and Africa, whose industrial inefficiency threatens forty percent of the world's eco-systems.

	We (America) don't really care one way or the other about your Kyoto Treaties or your Earth Summits. What we really like is to see you people begging us to validate your little efforts. Bush has just decided that it the best way to get that is to pretend to ignore you all, and his tactics appear to be working. You refer to the entire world groveling at our feet twice in your brief diary entry. This is the way we like it. Could you people devise some other meeting, or issue, or treaty, and hold it near and dear to your hearts? We'd like the opportunity to ignore something new so you'll beg us for attention again.
