I'm often asked to speak on various topics. Sometimes it is a Computer Science-related subject, such as how we are managing risk and optimizing functionality in a new use for the Java language that we are developing. Other times they want to know what I think about the aesthetic theories expressed by a particualar author's work, or what my take on the current geopolitical situation is. And afterwards there is usually a question and answer session. If it is a group of adults, they usually try to stay on the topic for a while before moving into other areas, namely the thing they really wanted to ask me about. With kids of course, they just go right past the boring stuff and ask me straight out.

And what is it that they all ask me? Why this of course:

"What's it really like being an Adequacy editor?" Here's how I answer them. It's like...

...at the end of The Godfather, you know, when Kay is demanding that Michael tell her the truth about whether or not he had Carlo killed, and he finally tells her "Alright. This one time... this one time I'll let you ask me about my affairs..." and Kay whispers "Is it true? Is it?"

And Michael says, "No."

That's exactly what it's like.
