Dear Mr. Script Kiddie, Sir:
We do not normally resort to throwing out good, controversial discussion in order to quash the trolls, but when the troll-posts exceed 100 in number, economics force us to implement our emergency triage system.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

Please feel free to use this diary as a forum for discussing the foul plague of trolling, and any attendant Free Speech or Censorship issues that need to be aired.

We at Adequacy do take your opinions seriously now and then, and this time, we will use this diary entry as an opportunity to collect any objections that legitimate, upstanding users of Adequacy might have.

Naturally, comments by trolls (you know who you are) and script kiddies (you too) will, as ever, be deleted.

I believe the entries "luniz apologists" and "Communists" are redundant, and for the sake of clarification, should be combined into a single entry to ensure the scientific correctness of the poll and reduce confusion for those who choose to vote for these options.

I confess, I am worried. (none / 0) (#3)

There seemed to be quite a lot of gun-fetishists posting in that particular diary. Whilst their immature cod-libertarian "philosophy" grates like fingernails on a blackboard, I can't help thinking that its better they spend their time writing masturbatory pro-gun diatribes here at adequacy than wandering around the streets shooting.

Its like negotiating with any crazy person. The negotiator's role is to keep them talking, to prevent them from doing something violent.

RobotSlave, I hope you know what you are doing.

Ahem.

How dare you inhibit Mr. Error's freedom of speech?

Please feel free to use this reply as a forum for discussing the notion that a privately owned web log, operated at no cost whatsoever to the general public, is obliged to publish any and all submissions in perpetuity.

But you know. Mr. Error has been for a while, I think, a valued member of the Adequacy community! Technologists of Adequacy! Couldn't you have simply frozen submissions, in some sophisticated technical manner, so that people (legitimate readers that is, not tr*lls of course) could enjoy the record of the lively controversy, just that they could not contribute any more to it?

Not because you're obliged or anything silly like that, but out of respect for your friend Mr. Error.

Yours WD "Bill the Galactic Hero" K - WKiernan@concentric.net

Since you changed your costume from 'droll poster' to 'jackbooted censor' your efforts are not so interesting.

Get a job.

But there were only 100 comments in that diary (1.00 / 1) (#12)
by Anonymous Reader on Thu Sep 5th, 2002 at 02:45:02 AM PST
so you're implicitly saying that there was no good, controversial discussion (which I think there was) and that all the comments were trolls (which I think is not true).

I don't like your rhetoric.

PS: have all the adequacy editors forced you to do all their deleting and meta-comment work so they look like aloof saints and you get the shitty 'hatchet man / coal face' image?

Looks like everyone must be a script kiddie or a troll, or RobotSlave is using his janitor status to compensate for his social inadequacy. I wonder how high the comment ID on this comment will be? 30? 40? Only one way to find out... poast!

You are confused. As has been previously discussed, Adequacy does not have "trusted users." It has "Zero Status" users. RobotSlave has explained this before.

About the same reaction to this snoozy post as to RS's last: utter disregard.

This person has decided that it is more empowering to delete uncomfortable posts, than to put all that effort into writing something droll.

Carry on.

Delete me, Tarquin.

I have to agree with RobotSlave (none / 0) (#25)
by PotatoError on Fri Sep 6th, 2002 at 08:44:34 AM PST
My initial predictions were that no more than 3 people would comment on my diary. Even so, just to be on the safe side I allowed a "buffer zone" of an extra 2 more comments. I figured that after that it just becomes crazy.

I am glad that Adequacy has a emergency triage system to deal with the problem. Uninpendingly, in my opinion, the bilaterals of the decision were well made.

Less than one week before the anniversary of that incident, I think it is disrespectful to have any sort of debate on any topic in case we offend anyone by mistake.
