Dear all, I'm off on a 2-week holiday in Canada next week. I'll be visiting Toronto and Vancouver (as well as the usual tourist traps of Niagara, Jasper, Victoria, etc), and I was wondering if you Adequate types had any recommendations of interesting things to do or see there, beyond what I've read in the Observer's travel supplement.

you're planning to see 2/3 of Canada in two weeks, eh? Are you taking the train from Toronto to Vancouver, thereby allowing you to stop in the magnificent tourist trap of Jasper, or getting helicoptered in?

As a can't-lose excursion, may I suggest the happening metropolis of Wawa? Bars and strip clubs galore, beautiful women, and casinos being built all the time. Truly a hedonist's paradise. And on your way west, too.

I'm flying from Toronto to Calgary, bussing to Jasper (with one day in Banff for some white-water rafting) and taking the ridiculously expensive Rocky Mountaineer to Vancouver.

I am enticed by your suggestion of Wawa, but I fear I would be in Nortel territory. Their spies would kidnap me and take me to Carling to fix their loadbuilds, or something.

when I say that Wawa is not strategic Nortel territory. But also keep in mind that my previous comments should not be taken seriously. If you want urban hedonism, Wawa is not the place to go. However, for a quieter, more scenic brand, it's pretty nice.

I would suggest the Fundy side of Nova Scotia (5.00 / 1) (#3)

for an interesting look at the genocidal practices of the English in removing the early French, Catholic settlers from their homeland of Acadia, but it's been mostly whitewashed, and the resettlement camps have long been removed. Now it's mostly plazas, ugly stores and lackluster cuisine, unless you seek out Indian food (as me and Mrs. did on our honeymoon).

on your honeymoon? What a coincidence - my husband and I did too. May I congratulate you on your very good taste, Mr. Rightmann.

(Did you also go to Halifax and PEI? Because that would be downright eerie.)

Halifax yes, for a day, PEI, no (none / 0) (#9)

We wanted to spend a week in Halifax, but the G8 was meeting there at the time (this was in 1995) so there were no rooms. Instead we stayed at a lodge near Liverpool. No PEI either, we had about a week in which to circle the lower part of NS, and then get back on our ferry to Portland. The Mrs. wanted someplace on the ocean that wasn't too crowded, NS was the closest.

somewhat depressed next week. Those damned dirty Carolina Hurricans beat our beautiful Toronto Maple Leafs in OT last night and knocked us out of the playoffs... Everyone is going to be all depressed for a couple of days. Well, hopefully by next week we'll be good again. :)

But seriously, if you're in Toronto, I would highly recommend checking out the Royal Ontario Museum. It's a really cool place. The Art Gallery of Ontario is also pretty hype. Finally, there's a whole pantload of information on Toronto at Toronto.com.
Enjoy your trip :)

The Leaves are a goon team. This all stems from the Coach, Fatt "drink a fifth of scotch before 10am" Quinn. People in the West, and my that I mean the people in Saskachewan, the province that borders the "outer rim", are not Leaves Fans. Nor are they fans of the communinist CBC, the Nazi and uber-fascist Don Cherry, or the "crotch watcher" Ron Mclean.
All I have to say is, GOlf Leaves GOlf!!!!!!

I suggest you camp out in Parkdale, Toronto (5.00 / 1) (#6)

and stay there for as long as it takes you to find and collect from that fucker, Milton, who still owes me for the two ounces he flushed down the toilet in a fit of paranoia while the police were in all reality nowhere near his fucking apartment.

If you go to North Vancouver, don't go to the Capilano Suspension Bridge, there is a free suspension bridge in Lynn Valley. They truck people to the rip-off bridge by the bus load all day; tourist trap by definition. But if walking in the forest over bridges is not hedonistic enough for you, you could always go for a stroll around East Hastings and look for the guys selling "rocks".
