 New Twist on Godwin's Law

 Author:  Topic:  Posted:

 Comments:
Godwin's Law states that the longer that a debate or argument goes on, the more likely it is that someone will make a reference to Nazi Germany or some facet thereof and make a point of it., or something along those lines. I propose an amendment to it.

Now, in our post-September 11 world, I think that Godwin's Law should be expanded to include the attacks on our country. How many times have you been in a discussion of a completely unrelated topic, only to have someone make a reference to 9/11? It is becoming the new fad thing to do, since Nazi Germany is too far gone in this generation's memories to have any substantial effect as an ad hominem attack.

While I do agree, as any government censorship-fearing American does, that the 9/11 attacks were terrible, I do believe that you should just let it go, and not make cockamamey references to it to try to win an argument. Godwin's Law also states that if you use a reference to Nazi Germany, then you automatically lose the debate if you invoke the Law.

Don't break the Law. Use good facts to back up your argument, not emotional and ad hominem points, and God bless America.

You misunderstand the law. It says that eventually, someone will either compare one of the debaters, or some other point to Nazi Germany or Hitler. Then Godwin's Law is invoked, and the conversation is OVER.

For example:
"I think guns should be outlawed."

"Guns were outlawed in Nazi Germany. You sir, are a Nazi!"

"Godwin's Law! Discussion Over!"

If you had taken time out to read the FAQ, you will find that adequacy does not support Godwin's law. If you are a Nazi, you can fully expect the intelligent readership of adequacy to point it out. We will not consider a discussion closed simply because someone is correctly identified as a sympathiser of Adolf Hitler and his National Socialist party.

In fact, your censorious ideas are quite remisicent of the laws of the Third Reich, and in fact, it makes me think that perhaps you are a Nazi!

You are not supporting Hitler but the French Revolution.

That makes sense. (5.00 / 1) (#8)

Without the French Revolution we would never have had a Hitler -- seeing as the French Revolution was the first practical attempt at building a liberalist society in the "real world".

The Russian revolution of 1917 was the second, and Hitler's Third Reich was the third.

Cromwell ? (5.00 / 1) (#11)
by dmg on Tue May 28th, 2002 at 06:34:30 AM PST
I know very little about the history of insignificant nations like the UK, but wasn't Cromwell a pious and religious man just trying to worship God the best way he could in an increasingly secular world ? (Somewhat similar to the misunderstood Talibs of today's Afghanistan). Indeed had the Interregnum been permanent(!) the UK might not be the revolting and disgusting cess-pool of liberalism, crypto-liberalism, quasi-liberalism and neo-liberalism that it is today. (see 'Big Brother' for evidence).

Surely the liberalist rot set in with Henry VIII with his murdering and divorce and extra-marital affairs and trying to elevate his status above that of God's representative on Earth i.e. the Pope.

Without free will, the distinction between liberalism and everything else blurs.

Besides, the "piety" of Cromwell is extremely misguided, at best.

I've always wondered what hives are, and why people break out in them. I just get this image of some red hexagonal lattice rash appearing on people's skin, with honey oozing out... if they're poked hard enough, a hexagon bursts open and a swarm of angry bees pour from the wound...
