What do you do when you see a friend in obvious emotional distress?

It is not always easy to decide how these situations should be handled. Particularly when you know that some people are misconstruing what is happening and reading into the situation things that are not there.
I have a friend, who is in obvious need of some help, be it just to talk for a while. One of the problems is finding not just the time, but also the place to allow this to happen. Work is not exactly the place to have a meaningful discussion about life and your objectives and expectations. Those are personal things, and besides, it can be incredibly awkward to discuss such things with snooping eyes and ears about. I guess I will just have to play this by ear. You cannot force someone to take your advice, but when you have been sought out to just be someone to listen, I'm not going to let them down. That would be against my concept of friendship. |
