I think they can't get in any worse state than they are now.As we have a few financial wizards on the site, I was wondering which was the best online share dealing service.

Poll is: buy Marconi?

So what exactly makes you think that?
Do you have information that investors trading in Marconi don't?
Or have you used your immense analytical powers to determine that since they've dropped so much, well, it's time they recovered a bit now?
Oh, please share you insight with us dear Noddy. But don't quit your VB job just yet and become a full time trader.

I can't be any worse than the analysts who recommended VA Linux or any of the other wonders of the 'new' economy. As the shares are so cheap I was thinking buying a thousand or so as a gamble.

"Not any worse" isn't going to make you any money. Besides, there were two kinds of analysts who recommended hopeless stock during the .com bubble. First we had those who truly believed that they would do well and consequently lost truck loads of money. And then there were those who were just recommending them to others in order to keep the price high, for different reasons. Which group you will be emulating if you actually buy Marconi stock is left as an exercise.

hurm.... Well, I guess this means welcome to the club "matey".

You're bitter from being burnt from recommends from these analysts.

Never bought any of this crap during the bubble. didn't make any money but didn't lose any. Prefer bottom fishing so I like (from an investment point of view anyway) the current market. Made a bit during the last recession, you see. British Aerospace was particularly sweet....

reaching a totally inaccurate conclusion thanks to a lack of facts.

Anything but. I am aware of my limitations and I stay away from trading on my own. That's what funds are for...

Knowing your limitations, had you attempted to contribute anything more to this thread, would have simply resulted in wasted bandwidth.

cheerio!

Actually, there is evidence to suggest you cannot do worse than any analyst, much less one that recommends VA Linux.

The FTSE has dropped below 5000 today for the first time in 3 years. All share prices, not just Marconi's, are likely to go down before they go up again.

Personally, I think Manchester United PLC's shares are currently undervalued and I'd be tempted to buy some if I had the cash. Their share price will almost certianly spiral when they win the Premiership, FA Cup and European Cup later in the season. But don't sue me if you lose a load of money on them :) You'd probably be better to place a bet on them winning The Treble, rather than buying shares anyway.

Treble is probably (5.00 / 1) (#6)

A good bet much as I don't like Man U winning everything in sight. Wouldn't touch the shares though as they are still very overvalued (i think)...

We're definitely in a bear market now but again calling the bottom is going to be as tough as calling the top..

i would look elsewhere if you want to buy tech. marconi obviously mis managed, jumping late into the telecom game, over investing when things were slowing down, and now laying off just about everybody they can. anything you buy of them i would only do with money you aren't afraid to lose.

Do some basic research, or buy the index (none / 0) (#13)

Read 'Where are the cusomer's yachts?' by Fred Schwed. Read 'Investing the Warren Buffet Way' and check out the motley fool.

The time to buy is, as they say, when the blood is running in the streets. I'd question if we are there just yet.

The question is, do you have any knowledge that leads you to suppose that Marconi will ever recover ?

Why not buy Microsoft or Cisco ? They are probably starting to become realistically valued.

Or Morgan Stanleys tech based unit trust. I seem to recall that did OK.

I am not a financial adviser, and I know nothing about finance. Treat the above advice as you would an AC on slashdot.

Erm, I am in the UK (5.00 / 1) (#15)

So it's easier to buy UK stock like Marconi. Plus they have severely got hammered, much much worse than Cisco or MS. The thing is that I have read tonnes about them and think they're over sold. They were once 30, now they're 0.38.
