So, I guess I'd better stop baking chocolate chip cookies for my colleagues, husband and friends, huh? Just to be on the safe side.

Happy Memorial Day, everyone. Go fire up those barbecues, but be careful.

Take responsibility for your own damn actions.

Too fat and lazy to get a bit of exercise? Blame the fast food industry. As if they're somehow forcing you to eat their crap.

I guess that's what makes America so great. Home of the fat and lazy, land of the litigious.

McDonalds! (none / 0) (#6)
by The Mad Scientist on Sat May 25th, 2002 at 05:10:16 PM PST
I wouldn't complain, if it wouldn't be for two things.

The less important is, they are eyesore. Regardless of where they move in, they look all the same, with loud red and even louder crying yellow, a visual ulcer on the landscape. We have buildings older than the USA, and stylized yellow buttocks placed right next to them. If McDonald's sensitivity for appearance of their surroundings characterizes USA's culture, no wonder the rumours say there is more culture in a cup of yoghurt than in all the USA.

The second thing is, they deprive me of my freedoms. I don't care (beyond their visual ...ahem... appearance) there are McDonald's outlets, as I can just not eat there - I care they are ousting other restaurants and bars, so I can't eat there anymore despite I used to.

I still have "choice". But it isn't between two small nice bars I used to like. Now all my "choice" is between McDonalds and KFC.

*spit*

I have a sensible alternative to suing Mickey D's (5.00 / 2) (#8)
by Chocolate Milkshake on Sun May 26th, 2002 at 04:27:22 AM PST
It is true that heart disease is the number one cause of death in the US, and that our nation is facing an epidemic of unsightly overweight people waddling two and fro, jiggling and panting, taking up two seats on airliners, and otheriwise being unpleasant to have around. Clearly, some solution is needed.

However, rather than wade into the legal morass of a class-action lawsuit against fast food manufacturers, it would make much more sense to simply amend the constitution to make it possible to pass legislation that would criminalize obesity. Persons who exceed a certain percentage of the ideal weight for their height would be jailed and put on a strict vegetarian diet until they slimmed down. This solution would result in a svelte, healthy populace without the economically detrimental effects of massive legal action against a group of corporations that constitute a sizeable fraction of our economic might.

Besides, if Chocolate Milkshakes are outlawed, well, you know the rest...

...and 60% of citizens will instantly become criminals.

Maybe I should invest to the prison industry. Could be more lucrative than dot-com some time back (with proper timing).

Another good investment could be a black market in smuggled sugar and lard.

Crazy Dad (5.00 / 2) (#11)
by First Incision on Sun May 26th, 2002 at 09:12:06 AM PST
For some reason this reminds me of my Dad's complaints about weightlifting in prison. He said prisoners should be underfed and denied exercise, so violent offenders would leave the facility weighing no more than 110 pounds. Then they would no longer pose a threat to society, or something.

We'll just have to be content with a limited dose of our favorite beverage, now won't we?

Some of us on Adequacy have already had to make peace with that. *wink*
