An announcement
My new heroine is elderly and unattractive, with ridiculous seventies glasses, no makeup and buck teeth. She has that sort of British accent that exchanges R's for W's. And she's a nun.

Yes, my new heroine is Sister Wendy Beckett.

My husband got the Sister Wendy American Collection video set for Christmas, and we've already watched the tapes where she visits the MFA in Boston and the Met in New York. It's not just that Sister Wendy knows a lot about art and is able to convey that knowledge in an interesting and generally accessible way, it's how moved and excited she gets while describing a work of art. On the Met tape, she shows and talks about a sculpture in the Egyptian gallery which is essentially half the face of a queen in yellow jasper, and she is able to relate that chunk of rock to history, geology, beauty and reactions to beauty, our souls, and the wonder of God's earth in less than five minutes. And while she was talking, her face lit up and she looked almost beautiful. I was enthralled. My current resolution for 2002 is to find beauty in more places...because it's not just here.

Hauntedattics Awards for 2001:

Best Album: Poses, Rufus Wainwright
Best Song for Jumping Around Your Living Room: "Burn Baby Burn", Ash
Best Video: "Clint Eastwood", Gorillaz
Best View: The High Peaks of the Adirondacks, snow-covered and (almost-full) moonlit, from across the valley on New Year's Eve

These days I end up spending all my time with other college students... I lose perspective.

Old nuns and art... That shouldn't sound strange but when you never talk to anyone older than 25 you forget that nuns exist and if they did that they could appreciate art.

Life is about balance. Nuns are ballast.
