Liberalism is not only wrong, it's ugly.

 Comments:
Artsy fartsy liberals love modern art. They dont have a choice. If they recognized a choice in the matter, it would have to be between consumate craftsmanship and liberalist pretension. Adequate people can recognize craft because craft explains itself. Pretension, on the other hand, requires windy, meaningless, verbal explanations instead of a lifetime of difficult training and hard work. The only work a liberalist knows is the work other people do to fund welfare for cultural elitists who couldnt draw train tracks with correct perspective if you lent them NAWL holding a protracter.

is it just me or is kuro5hin full of nazis
For example, if you arent a liberal, you might be under the impression that the subject of landscape painting is trees, rocks expansive skies and, somewhere in the distance, a buccolic mill stirring the waters of a bubbling creek. Not so;   you havent learnt to see:
While it is the glowing, ovoid areas of color that the eye first embraces in a typical Rothko, it is useful to become aware of how they are contextualized with often dramatically emphasized horizons -- and borders. These divisions are mostly two, often three (occasionally more). They define a horizon gestalt between the areas of color; the borders the peripheral limitation of our normal view of any horizon. We thus float at the center of a prospect that falls out as below us, before us and above us -- the artist leaving us to our own associations, but determining within his formal structures, the extent of the world he wants those associations to inhabit. (Here the structure of the works of the early 1940s is crucial -- for they remain latent after 1950.) Thus, Rothko's tripartite and quadripartite compositions present a radical abstraction of the planet in cross-section from below the viewer's feet up, the internal light of that world provides it welcoming warmth or abject negation, as befits the artist's moods. At the end of his life, the last, sad, bipartite images (MRCR 814-831), leave us with a single horizon between the black of space and the earth's lithic interior -- all place of human grace on the surface under the sun having slipped away from his despairing reach.

[...] Utterly out of keeping with Rothko's normal manner, they could easily be dismissed as studio-sweepings -- yet they assume a strange poignancy. Painted in acrylic in pale blues, pinks, dark rose and grays, they assume a certain pallor of extinction, as if they are a last, feeble expression of the artist's rage against the dying of the light.

After eighty years of unchallenged praise for the most idiotic examples of artwork passed off as great masterpieces, its time for a bit of politically incorrect counter jargon along with some serious criticism.

Adequacy reader with 20/20 vision: That looks like something the dog threw up. How can you call yourself an artist if you cannot even draw?

Liberalist who's installed The Gimp: You have an "untrained eye". To appreciate art, you must trace its pedigree in art theory.

Adequacy reader with 20/20 eyesight: Comrade, if I had a problem with my eyes, I would rush to an optometrist, not a liberalist art critic.

Pretty art. (5.00 / 1) (#1)

Isn't this fuzzy little lamb excruciatingly cute! Now, there's some appealing art about a lamb.

that's not art (none / 0) (#2)

I can prove it logically. Ever play the "one of these things does not belong with the others" game? Trust me, I have lots of expensive *art* books full of nudes and while not one of those nudes ever excited me sexually, I couldnt look look at your innocent little lamb without pulling the drapes.

Your example is pornography. Pornography is a vapid pleasure exactly like computer games.

...to be attractive. Hell, if they are blessed with natural good looks, more power to them, I say.

But man, oh man! To pose like that, to be so wanton, so lascivious. It's just filthy the way she seems to be inviting... inviting everyone, you, me... God. God, how did anyone ever get it in their head that a lamb could represent innocence!

That little bitch has been to the county fair and back a time or two, that's for sure.

By the way, the Godward links were a treat, eh? Now I know how they got the idea for the new iMac.

Is what happens when take raw talent and waste it copying pictures in playboy magazine. (Where's Fabio?) If he was alive today he'd be airbrushing buxom fantasy/scifi heroines without pubic hair.

You may bash as much of the currently-in-vogue moronic shock art as you want, but Rothko is off limits.

of course he's off limits (none / 0) (#5)

Rothko is off limits

I dont blame anyone for staying as far away as possible from a raging alcoholic. You know why he took his own life, dont you? It was because he couldnt live with the knowledge that he was a fraud, a gadfly amongst real painters, a con artist nipping at the heels of talented artists who loved little girls (in the purely symbolic sense, dig?) and would never have let bambi's mother die if they lived to work for Disney. Check out In Penitence. Wonder what naughty thing she did wrong to seek penitence? It doesnt matter, he obviously forgave her!

Oh, so   cute!. Ugh, so not. I mean look at him. Tell me that isnt the face of a pervert looking back at you.

I bet it was that homocidal lunatic Pollock who led him astray.

zikzak, please tell me something. (none / 0) (#7)

Why do you hate God so much?

If you expel me from this community, how shall I spin my wheels? I shall be forced to install Lunix and occupy my time learning to browse the web using telnet; for if I do nothing to fill my days, I shall surely go insane. I can paint, I suppose, but even if I painted a dozen messy rectangles a day, there would be nothing in the remaining 23 hours except drink and barbituates.

Please reconsider. Art is not only about pretty pictures, art is about compassion. Have you already forgotten what was said about little girls and Bambi?

Fine, I'll pinch hit a different moral degenerate for Rothko; it's not like there's a shortage of drug addicted liberalists committing suicide to choose from. You know why Basquiat took his own life, dont you? Because all the homiez were making fun of his tagz, man.

It's settled then. Graffiti is visual clutter not unlike porn, it is not art.

fixed links (none / 0) (#4)
by venalcolony on Sun Jan 27th, 2002 at 11:13:37 PM PST
I'm posting repaired links to accomodate the helpless Lunix users on this site who will get the spelling wrong when they try to edit their address bar. First, hubba bubba!

Second, the Heritage Foundation link is repeated twice. It's a fine non-profit organization whose wisdom deserves to be heard at least twice in these times of waning patriotism, but I didnt think of that when I mistakenly linked to them the second time. Accordingly, read the heritage link once, then read what America's most insightful southern gentleman (is there any other?) and role model for public intellectuals has to say.

Thank you all, even the artless European slobs.
