That's definitely the forum for intelligent discussion :-)

But seriously, do you get the impression that attitudes in the States towards war is hardening? Especially as the hijackers seem to be arabs from what the media is saying.

If it is war and Bin Laden is the guy behind it and the Taliban refuse to give him up, would the US go into Afganistan with ground troops as cruise missiles don't seem to be very effective weapons for assisination...

Well, the only people I've talked to about this (5.00 / 1) (#2)

are my wife and my mom, so my sample is skewed. We weren't discussing war.

I did listen to a morning talk show on the way into work, and the dj's were urging restraint, until we know more, as were most of the callers. One curious piece was the KMart had stopped selling guns and ammo, to prevent vigilante justice against furriners. Tough call, with hunting season coming up.

Aside from that, I have the same internet (probably less of one, since I'm in the puritanical US, which blocks gaming sites and sex sites) that you do.

gcc is to software freedom as guns are to personal freedom.

So they pretty much just go along with what the government says. They are saying some mixed things. On one hand going to war with Afghanistan does nothing but waste money. We need their help to get to bin Laden. Blowing up a bunch of innocent Afghanis won't do anything but drive survivors to supporting bin Laden, who is probably somewhere safe. It's a "multi-front war".

I also heard people talking about bin Laden's followers being tens of thousands strong, including "sleeper agents" who are "holding down normal jobs" etc etc. I'm lucky in that I can probably pass off as Mexican. I've got family that's in a lot worse situations than I am. In particular I'm worried about my dad. He was born in this country, lived here all his life, never had any contact with any Arab living outside this country, but his skin color is going to make him a suspect to a lot of people. I really hope he drives home instead of flying this weekend.

if the anti-Taliban rebels had the means to pull off this sort of attack.
