 Hypocrisy of 'hackers'and Slashbots

I didn't realise what a bunch of hypocrites these g**ks were until the Hackingand Manga articles appeared. They all claim to be 'libertarians' and pro-free speech but when concerned Christians write mildly critical pieces about aspects of this empty technophilic culture, what do they do?

Yes they try to shut down the site using their l33t haXOr skillz instead of arguing rationally about it. They're no better than Stalinists. I am glad people like this are not in charge of this great country of ours.

You shouldn't have posted the "hacker" story; it's making me lose faith in the human race. One more proof that being able to type semi-intelligible sentences does not equate with intelligence. Perhaps that stupid "Turing Test" should be finally abolished, left to rot on the waste-dump of history.

Credit for it but I didn't write it. I am not even an editor here.

I thought it was amusing but depressing to see all these twats writing two page rebuttals on every point on the argument. No wonder we're in tech slump if that's the calibre of people going into that industry.

bots (5.00 / 2) (#3)
by Merekat on Thu Dec 6th, 2001 at 05:41:15 AM PST
There are slashbots and kurobots or kuro5hites, if you prefer. So what have we here on Adequacy?

Adequabots? Adebots?

Or does Adequacy consider itself beyond groupthink? Surely people attempt it, despite the best wishes of the editorial staff?

Tricky (5.00 / 1) (#4)
by nobbystyles on Thu Dec 6th, 2001 at 05:52:41 AM PST
I suppose it depends on one's mood. I like the stuff here but sometimes it gets on my tits as I would like a serious discussion on certain topics and it degenerates into trolling for the sake of trolling. I can't be satirical every hour of the day unlike some of the editors here.

I think there is an element of group think here. You definitely get shot down in flames if you mention K5 in favourable light. Or if you take the editors on...

Open your eyes. (none / 0) (#5)

Open your eyes, this site has more serious discussion than several kuro5hins put together. Unless you think that debating the daily life of your favorite pet cactus is "stimulating discussion"? You really need to differentiate between "serious" and "wanker". You can't call yourself "serious" if you cannot laugh at yourself.

In conclusion, may I remind you that trolling is strictly forbidden on this site? Troll posts get proptly deleted; this is why this site has a well-organized editorial policy. Unlike other sites, adequacy.org is not sqeamish to obliterate trolls with extreme prejudice.

Disagree (5.00 / 1) (#6)
by nobbystyles on Thu Dec 6th, 2001 at 06:41:15 AM PST
Sometimes I want to discuss the 'daily life of my cactii' or other non political stuff in a straight forward manner. And sometimes I want to have a serious discussion without having to be satirical or taking the piss out of the stupidity of others. I enjoy doing that as well but not all the fsking time.

I think Adequacy is a great site but you have to be in the mood for it. Maybe I am 'inadequate' and sometimes can't distinguish between 'extremely clever comments' and 'trolling'. And there is an element of group think here which Merekat has rightly pointed out.

You are wrong. (none / 0) (#7)

Americans as a group tend to exist in a cultural vacuum; if you had any experience with western artistic culture, you'd realize that the style and presentation of adequacy.org is exactly what is considered "serious discussion". Conversely, kuro5hin by any standards is infantile tripe. You may not like it, but that is just how the world works. By world standards, the only place where kuro5hin-style "discussions" happen is in chatrooms for early teenagers. Sorry if I burst your bubble, but facts are stubborn things.

Thankfully but I recognise that the style of debate here is that of the 18th Century English coffee shop where Boswell and Johnson held court. So it is outmaded and not suitable for the modern world.

Maybe. (none / 0) (#9)

Though to me, it reeks more of post-modernism and deconstructionist stuff; also outdated, but not horribly so.

Trolling is strickly forbidden.

And once you start whining about the other guests on this site and accusing them of having "an element of group think" then you become... Well, a whiner for lack of a better word.

Also this thread reeks of meta commentary, which we all know is a first sign of becoming lame.

Who made up that rule? (none / 0) (#14)

I haven't seen Derrida or Rosseau quotes on the subject...

Maybe Foucault made a comment on Geekizoid saying 'Only lamerz talk shit about meta stuff, you faggot'...

groupthink (5.00 / 1) (#12)

Bah. As Aquinas put it, "Everything that rises must converge." It's not groupthink, it's the intellectual cognate to parallel evolution.

then the moniker of choice is "adequeers". Otherwise, you're pretty much stuck with "adequabots".
