I just wanted to say I really love this site, and thanks to everyone for being so nice and welcoming here, because it really does mean quite a bit to me to be part of a community that accepts me for who I am. You guys are great, and in these troubled and uncertain times, I think we should be paying special attention to and giving extra thanks to the great things we have around us!

The old paintbrushes I'm sewing on this foam board kind of reek of turpentine and oil.

What you say is very true, especially when you consider that Thanksgiving is just around the corner.

(For "non-USasians," Thanksgiving is the special holiday devoted to giving thanks! A lot of countries don't think thankfulness is important enough to deserve its own holiday but in America we think people should be grateful for their blessings. This thankful attitude is just one of the many things that makes America so much better than other places!)

by John Milton on Sat Nov 10th, 2001 at 03:55:56 PM PST
Thanksgiving is the day when Americans give thanks to all the native men and women who helped them upon their arrival. On Thanksgiving, we solemnly remember that this land was once all theirs while simultaneously stuffing ourselves with large amounts of poultry. Hey...I love this holiday! :)

I believe the Canucks do have their own Thanksgiving, but they celebrate it right around the time of the U.S. Columbus Day. Just to be annoying and try to convince us that they have their own independent country or something.

After checking around a bit, it turns out that you are right.

But that doesn't change my main point that Canadians as a whole are an ungrateful people group. They harbour a disturbing amount of resentment and hate for Americans. I don't know why that is but I think it's time for it to stop.

Canadians need to grow up...

...often annoying that way, aren't they? All that ranting and raving about their Tory-socialist government, their national health plan, their 'different' 'accents' and the fact that their country isn't snowed in 24/7/365. They should just stop already and go back to their igloos.

(Of course, you realize we will soon incur the wrath of Mr. Canada himself, nathan, if we don't stop ragging on his cute little country.)

Apart from this, every statement in the parent post is 100% correct.

It's like you're saying goodbye or something. Don't kill yourself, Jin. You're doomed to die anyway. It is inevitable, you know, and death will come sooner than you think. All life ends, and that is it -- it is OVER and nothing remains. You think you will some how miss out? No way. You are GOING TO DIE!!!

So don't push it. Don't be in a rush. You're worms meat. We all are, so don't act like you have do do anything to help it along.

But perhaps you speak of metaphorical death. The old, dull, self-obsessed Jin Wicked who had nothing better to talk about than her boring, boring, BORING personal life is DEAD, and is being replaced by a more interesting Jin, who has given up her personal obsessions and expanded her horizons. The new Jin knows that the rest of the world exists.

O happy day! Congradulations on your re-birth, Jin Wicked!

I don't plan on being worm meat though. I'm going to have myself cremated and mixed into paint, then have another artist paint my last um...portrait using my remains (as per my sketches an instructions before death). And then donate myself to some museum!

I'm hoping these bizarre circumstances will be weird enough to make me cling to the world for awhile, so I can fulfull my dream of spending an eternity scaring and tormenting small children on school field trips. ;)

Are you real? (none / 0) (#9)
by Anonymous Reader on Sat Nov 10th, 2001 at 09:33:34 PM PST
A beautiful rumor has circulated in various places that this particular online persona is simply a group project, with different postings being made by members of the group, perhaps as a sort of social behaviour experiment. And the sprightliness of the persona's diaries compared to its earlier adequacy diaries lend some credence to this rumor. But who knows what's what on the internet.

Only two problems (none / 0) (#19)
by SpaceGhoti on Mon Nov 12th, 2001 at 08:03:52 PM PST
First: I'm afraid that the last time I was in Houston (two years ago), the only thing that impressed me with it was the street/highway planning. Beyond that, nothing impressed me. Plus, being a Yankee in Texas is not conducive to healthy living. I'm not likely to willingly go back there.

Second: I'm a card-carrying homicidal maniac. Really. It's a blood red card. Very tastefully done. Very sorry about that, though.

All the same, if you ever happen to swing through Brisbane in Australia, send me an email. You can meet my wife and daughter, and we'll show you some of the nicer things about Australia. I'm finding that I really like it here.

The bf was in Australia before we moved in together last year. I've got quite a few pictures of him in Perth, and it really is a beautiful place. I wouldn't mind visiting there someday... not sure I'd want to live there indefinitely, though. :)

I've not yet been to Perth, although eventually I plan to tour the country. One of the nice things about jobs out here is that minimum vacation time is four weeks instead of two. I can cover a lot of ground in four weeks.

Come to Brisbane. It's in a tropical zone, and the flowers are spectacular (let alone the trees. Bright purple leaves?). The people are as friendly as advertised, and they've got some decent coffee shops, as well as modern conveniences like Baskin Robbins.

Coffee and ice cream. What more could you ask for?

Aborigines (none / 0) (#23)
by SpaceGhoti on Tue Nov 13th, 2001 at 12:41:28 AM PST
I heard a story but have not confirmed that an Eskimo group went around the world to check how each government deals with their aborigines. At the end of their study, they declared that Australian aborigines received the best treatment from their government. I gather that the Australian natives received this news with mixed feelings.

I'm not going to worry about it. Just about every race who ever migrated somewhere has displaced someone else, and countless cultures and peoples have vanished into oblivion in the name of progress. No amount of apologies or reparations are going to change that or bring them back. I don't believe it's fair to punish anyone for the crimes of their ancestors.

Considering the aboriginal deaths in custody problem, it sounds like a made up story. I would suspect that in any such study, New Zealand would come out ahead, since their treatment, or should I say coexistance with the native Maori people belies most of your post.
