I haven't made much of a fuss about it here at the Adequacy, but I gave up alcohol for lent.
It has been a trying time, but now it is Easter, holiest day of the year, and I am getting myself soused on Delicious Bloody Marys made from a recipe of my own devising. See Below. |

Delicious Bloody Mary
Start with these things:
Sautee the garlic and dried peppers in a bit of olive oil. Unless you've got some restaurant kitchen experience, you should probably do this over low temperature so you don't burn anything. Add the shallots, sliced, the celery, sliced, and the pearl onions, whole and peeled. Add 2 tbsp butter if you feel like it. Cook until the sliced things are translucent. Fish out the dried peppers and discard. Add:
Turn heat up to high, bring to a boil, reduce heat, simmer for an hour. Allow to cool. Fish out the pearl onions and set aside for garnish. Refrigerate overnight. In the morning, put everything in a blender together with:
You will probably have to blend things in two batches, and then recombine. Now, it is time to season. Measurements that follow should be taken as a rough guide only-- always season to taste.
Now, serve it. Get your glass, put a few ice cubes in it, a healthy ounce of vodka, top off with the concoction you've been working on. Garnish with all sorts of things. Hearts of Celery, green olives, the onions you set aside, and pickled cherry pepper are all good. But don't feel like you have to stop there. Remember, this is a meal. Splash in a bit more hot sauce if you Like It Hot. Dust with fresh ground black pepper or Nanami Togarashi or other powdery spicy stuff. Drink. Repeat. Did I mention that I haven't had a drop to drink since fat tuesday? That's forty days. Forty-six if you're one of us secular people who count Sundays. And now I'm drinking.
I love alcohol. Love it! Happy Easter! |
