So I spent 10 hours of my life recording, mixing, and burning my bands first demo. 15 minutes. 7 Songs. It gets no better than this.

There is nothing cooler than taking a classic, beautiful, haunting melody and ruining it with my voice.

Mostly I guess it's all about having fun. We're taking old songs and making them really loud or just ridiculous, kind of like Me-First and the Gimme Gimme's. Except I had never heard of them when I auditioned for this group.

But hey, it's all about having fun.

By the way, I am in Columbus, and it suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks here.

You mean Columbus is real ?

As in, it actually exists ?

I was always under the impression that Columbus was a fictional place that was used by adults to frighten small children into behaving .. you know, sort of like Utah. ("You kids eat your vegetables or by God we're hopping in the car and going to Columbus!" .. "*CHOMP* *CHOMP* *CHOMP*")

This could ruin my day.

Wait a minute. Don't you live in one of those horrible M states? Like Montana or something?

That's pretty low on the food chain buddy.

Why don't you go have a drink and relax a little bit.

That would be South Dakota (3.50 / 2) (#19)

One of the states most preferred by Christ.

Take that!

Columbus Indiana? Georgia? Ohio? I think almost every state in the US has a Columbus (maybe not Alaska or Hawaii)

honestly, no.

and if Columbus Ohio is correct, then I can easily believe his statement about Columbus. This also says something about the fact that I do not live there anymore.

You spent a long time in the studio (3.00 / 2) (#5)
by iat on Thu Sep 6th, 2001 at 08:25:32 AM PST
When I recorded a demo with my old band, we recorded, mixed and mastered an 11 minute demo (3 songs) in less than 7 hours of studio time. That included setting up and packing up equpiment, doing an arty multiple-layered vocal thing and recording and adding samples too. It's not even as if we specialised in simple 2 minute songs either. What took you so long? Do you think you're Brian Wilson or something?

we spent a good deal of time smoking cigarettes and chilling. The studio time was dirt cheap, since I know the people so we kind of took it easy.

I'm not a perfectionist by any means (which you'll hear if you download any of the tunes) But I did make us re-record a few tunes, just because they were awful. We did everything live except vocals and the odd guitar solo here and there. But it took us about 4 hours to lay the music down to the point where I wouldn't be embarassed to have other people hear it.

I'll excuse you (5.00 / 2) (#8)
by iat on Thu Sep 6th, 2001 at 08:41:57 AM PST
If you managed to re-record bad tracks, then I'll forgive your slowness. I wish we'd done the same - on one of our songs, my lead guitar part was mixed out of the first verse because the singer was out of tune and it clashed with the guitar (or so he claimed anyway, and he threw a tantrum until we gave in). But, rather than getting the singer to re-record his vocals, the bastards just removed my guitar from the mix :(

We did very little live though. It took me about 8 attempts to record a 10 second guitar solo - and the recorded version still has mistakes in it. OTOH, I managed a 3 minute solo on the first take. The bastard singer wasted all our studio time by insisting on perfection in everything he did.

Singers piss me off. They're all prima donnas. I tried my best to act like a prima donna rock star, but he could beat me at it without even trying. Bastard.

Heh. (5.00 / 2) (#10)
by TheReverand on Thu Sep 6th, 2001 at 08:47:23 AM PST
Don't get me started on PrimaDonnas.

I'm really lucky in this band that I am the biggest bastard, and that's not too bad. Everyone is real good at their instruments, my bassist and drummer are super tight. I on the other hand am rather free wheeling and manic, so I refuse to right solos or anything of the sort. Every solo is ad-libbed on the spot, 1 take, mistakes left in, because I really felt that it gave it more of that "live" feel that I love.

Besides, this is punk rock, so there is room for a little slop.

When I get it up, download it and let me know what you think of the production (I'm already sure everyone will hate the music).

Proves my point... (5.00 / 2) (#11)
by iat on Thu Sep 6th, 2001 at 08:56:17 AM PST
You're the singer and you admit to being the biggest bastard. Either people with a tendency towards being a prima donna are naturally drawn towards singing, or giving someone a microphone turns them into a prima donna.

We were never that tight - our drummer changed tempo several times during the song, and we never had a permanent bassist (the rhythm guitarist recorded the bass parts, and we usually played live without a bass).

Besides, this is punk rock, so there is room for a little slop.

I think we would have been classed as prog rock :(

Prog rock? Are you kidding?

*shuddering at the thought of yes, dream theatre and rush touring to cleveland*

Did I mention that we recorded in the same studio as warrant? That's pretty cool I think.

Prog rock? Are you kidding?

No, prog rock is as accurate as any other description of the stuff we did.

Did I mention that we recorded in the same studio as warrant?

Who?

ia. Their biggest hits were "Cherry Pie" and "Heaven".

Their guitar player co-produced last night.

Kind of thrilling in a retro way for an old school metal kid.

Since part of the movie is about ripper, the guy from akron who replaced rob. I'm pretty excited about that. Although in real life ripper was and is a wanker.
