I'm sure I don't have to spend much time revealing or explaining that many induhviduals involved in the Discordian world usually have at least one mental problem.

I came to Adequacy for this survey regarding this; I felt it was the best place to harvest the greatest number of responses.

So I pose to you, gentle Adequacy readers (and, of course, editors): what mental sickness/imbalance/ailment do you have?

Additionally, please include the sorts of doctors you see and medications you take, and ny therapy you participate in.

	I am talking about real mental problems-- bipolar disorder, chronic depression, social anxiety, axniety disorder, total lack of self-esteem, etc. etc.

	It all started when I was twelve and developed an anxiety disorder when I thought one of my friends died right next to me. After that, I developed a severe chronic pain on my right side, just below, or at the bottom of, my ribcage. It was also about that time that I was stricken with walking pneumonia because my cousins and I had been following a stream through the woods barefoot. A constant series of bronchitis episodes have followed ever since. During the spring-time, if I walk outside I am terribly allergic to something. I'm not sure what it is but it causes me to suddenly start itching terribly all over my body. I've had this strange lump in my scrotum for 14 years. I think it's a fetus. My spine is curved. Sometimes, when I'm lying down, I cannot sit up because the pain is so severe. Recently, I've developed this vague soreness on both sides of my lower back, right about where I would expect my kidneys to be. I have strange heart fluctuations. They are random in nature and quite distressing. I haven't told the doctor because I'm afraid he will put me to sleep. I have clinical depression which was probably caused by using too much LSD. I used to be addicted to opium. I have bad dreams. I poop a lot. I frequently have uncontrollable muscle spasms. Sometimes my left leg and hand go numb. I have insomnia. I'm a sad, bitter, lonely, scatological shitfucker. I think there's more, but I have a bad memory too.

	The problem I have is that I forever have to try and prove to myself that I actually exist... After all, who's to say that I'm just a stray consciousness floating in the ether that is not tied to any physical being in particular? As for you lot - you'll have to try and prove your own existence.. I've got enough work trying to deal with myself.

	Alcohol Dependancy Syndrome. != Alcoholism. Chronic Depression. Meds: Venlafaxine 3 * 75 Mg daily. No therapy, the pills and beer work very well. Am I insane/mad. Not technically.

	You can think of a personality disorder as set of personality traits that were picked up through childhood and adolescence. Whilst they may have worked in the particular environment at the time, they are maladapted for normal adult life. Personality disorders are a continuum from mild to severe. Most people have a few quirks; it's when they impact on daily life or emotional state that it becomes a problem. Those with severe problems often become depressed, and self medicate with alcohol, cocaine, speed, whatever and may get a diagnosis through the criminal justice system. That was a very brief intro; there are many sub-groups such as borderline, histronic, narcissistic and so on. It's pretty interesting subject. This is a good link for more info on it. Venlafaxine and other anti-depressants don't treat the underlying problem directly, but alleviate depression and help moderate other problems. They allow the individual to unlearn inappropriate traits, beliefs and thinking. If the suffer is inclined to. Many don't because it's quite a task. The most common approach is cognitive therapy. Venlafaxine is similar to Prozac and other Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors(SSRI), these increase the amount of a neurotransmitter 'serotonin' available for use in the brain. Low levels have been found to be linked to anxiety and depression. Venlafaxine is a later generation of things like Prozac, it increases the availability of two neurotransmitters which relate to mood serotonin and norepinephrine. It also weakly inhibits reuptake of dopamine. Low levels of dopamine are often found in people having abnormally high level of activity or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Curiously dopamine support is used to treat narcolepsy and parkinsons disease. I take 3 tablets of 75 milligrams each, a day. Which is a relatively high dose.
