Why? (none / 0) (#1)
by doofus on Tue Mar 19th, 2002 at 04:02:45 PM PST
Do you need that illegal hacker OS Linux removed from your machine and the US government-approved OS Windows XP installed instead?

I'm sure you can find a 12 year old in your neighborhood to do that simple task for you. Adequacy editors are probably much too busy to help you unless you are willing to pay travel expenses.

No, not exactly (none / 0) (#2)

It'd just make my life that little bit less infuriating knowing there was someone who knew SOMETHING about technology around here.

they pay me big bucks to fiddle bits while I'm in a semi-comatose state. How may I abuse you? Get it -- I made a Dogbert joke! Dogbert is geek code for "amusing to technogeniuses only".

Anyway, what did you want to ask me about?

budlite is just a troll.

(With apologies for the previous confusion.)

I'm not. I'm just posting the impression I get of the editorial staff here. Which, in quite a few cases, isn't much.

he asked... (none / 0) (#11)

...for editors who knew about computers. He wasn't referring to self proclaimed computer scientist who use the term so that no one will realize that they really have no real knowledge to speak of. Anyone holding a lengthy discussion with you could tell immediately that you know very little.

Do you have a degree in that yet? (3.00 / 2) (#13)

If not, you are merely a Computer Scientist in Training.

We'll get some editors who know something about computers just as soon as we get rid of some of our obnoxious know-it-all readers.

5 years as a DBA/Developer (5.00 / 1) (#8)
by Peter Johnson on Tue Mar 19th, 2002 at 05:07:35 PM PST
Very strong OS background with lots of VMS, Solaris, HP/UX, FreeBSD, Lunix (7 years +) and Windows NT/2000 experience. Even stronger RDMS skills with Microsoft SQL Server 4.21 - 2000 and Oracle 7.2 - 8i.

Lots of Perl + Apache web development experience too.

I think the problem is that we simply know too much about computers. The editors of Adequacy.org are fully aware of the failings of the Lunix operating system (worse than both FreeBSD and Windows 2000), the failings of Unix (a giant step backwards in Operating Systems research and an apology is in order for putting null terminated strings in C). We know all about computers.

You, however, don't. Quite frankly, you Lunix fanboys don't know shit. You're cruising along thinking you're badder than God just because you know more about computers than your parents.

That's just sad.

Are you adequate?

Not you (none / 0) (#17)
by budlite on Wed Mar 20th, 2002 at 05:55:37 AM PST
Although I don't agree with about 99% of what you say, I know you actually know something about computers. I was referring more to elenchos, given his conviction that ping and telnet are completely illegal and only used by hackers (in the negative sense).

Please forgive Refutation, (3.00 / 2) (#20)
by because it isnt on Wed Mar 20th, 2002 at 06:53:45 AM PST
he's only just learning the ropes of Computer Science. Once he's had a full and proper education, he will no doubt realise the proper use of ping and telnet, and will no longer scream "hacker!" at anything he doesn't understand.

...the request was for persons who actually have some working knowledge of course. It was not for persons, such as yourself, which fantasy worlds and suffer from paranoid delusions complete with IP Tokens.

Perhaps when you can actually discuss a topic without sounding like an idiot maybe they'll consider you. Until then continue to discuss things that make no sense and a we'll (and anyone willing to take a simple trip to any website, library, or willing to ask a professional) continue to make you look like an idiot.

Anyone who thinks that a software firewall blocks packets before they even reach the computer the firewall is running on obviously doesn't know much.

budlite - you need to finish your CS degree (none / 0) (#19)
by Anonymous Reader on Wed Mar 20th, 2002 at 06:26:46 AM PST
before pretending to be a computer expert. Anyone who thinks that a software firewall blocks packets before they even reach the computer the firewall is running on obviously doesn't know much.

I would put it to you, that it is you who don't know very much. Most modern NICs have options in the hardware to silently drop packets based on MAC address. Some of the more up to date ones can do it by IP address. The software tells the NIC which packets to drop and they get dropped. Which part of that don't you understand ?

That's not the point (none / 0) (#21)
by budlite on Wed Mar 20th, 2002 at 07:36:27 AM PST
The packet still reaches the NIC, so although the packet doesn't reach further than that the bandwidth is still used. That's the point I'm trying to make.

readers who don't give a shit about what operating system their computer uses, and who'd rather talk about the important things in life, like politics, religion, culture, the arts, business and human interaction.

I also have better things to talk about other than trivialties such as "business, the arts and religion". I mean shit, arent those the most pointless and boring topics on earth?

Yes, yes they are. And, unlike computer operating systems, business, the arts and religion have provided innumerable boring and pointless conversations (not to say wealth, aesthetic satisfaction and spiritual connection) to billions of people over the past several millenia.

I hardly think any conversation involving the words "Linux" or "Windows XXX" could ever be considered interesting.

Operating systems are here only for last few decades. Also, only a handful of the Illuminati is able to fully appreciate the inner beauty of some of them, and the inner beauty of technology itself - which makes even the best art look pale and uninteresting.

I know quite a bit about computers (none / 0) (#24)
by Adam Rightmann on Wed Mar 20th, 2002 at 01:11:57 PM PST
my daytime job is supporting very large and fast printers using NT and Solaris front ends, in heterogeneous networking environments. We have Macs and Windows machines acting as print clients, and I even installed Linux on one box, just in case we have a call on it (after 2+ years, no escalations on Linux).

However, there is a plethora of computer advice columns on the internet, and I fail to see how my two cents would do anything more than lower the signal to noise ratio, thus, I let my able co-editors write computer columns.

Now, I did notice a lack of spirituality sites on the web, a lack of columns on caring for your soul. Thus, my calling here.
