I suggest during these dark times, you lend some support to the flagging US economy and go to Hawaii. Maui is very nice.

how expensive is accomodation in hawaii? could you get a room for US$100 a night or is that unlikely

It depends. (none / 0) (#3)

I think $100/night might be possible. Have a look at MAUI.NET. I would recommend Kaanapali beach hotel having stayed there myself, but you're looking at $165/night rack rate or about $130 if you can get a discounted rate since it is high season.

A search of travelnow shows 2-star accomodation at around $80/night. So it depends how much luxury you require.

Maui is a really amazing island. There's lots of things to do, the people are very friendly, the scenery is amazing. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

So, when are you going to let the long-suffering Hawaiian peoples free from imperialist oppression?

if the U.S. gave Hawaii its independence, the islands would just be immediately annexed by the Japanese. Well, at least commercially if not politically...

Wait a minute. This may already be happening. Never mind.

Everyone laughs at me when I say (seriously) that I refuse to buy shoes that are made in China. But I just can't and won't do it, for reasons that should be fairly obvious.

It's hard to avoid buying something that's made in China, though. Even American flags.

Legally Hawaii is still independent. (none / 0) (#11)

Its just that the USA refuses to recognize this

I hear Afghanistan is pretty jumpin'.

If you carry a video camera, a mini cassette recorder and a press pass, an unforgettable time can be had in neighboring Pakistan.

Nobody knows how to party like the Dutch. And while you're there, go into a coffee shop and ask for the "alternate" menu.

Presumably the "alternate" menu in a Duch coffee shop is the one without the soft drugs on it?
