I've spent almost 12 hours in Paris, so I am clearly an expert.

Train station lockers are probably more expensive than you would think, but other than that they are quite convenient.

As for site seeing, just across the street from Gare de l'Est is a delightful French restaurant that looks and functions exactly the same as McDonalds. However, it is a French restaurant, and clearly is not some USian corporate chain devoid of soul and character. This is because it is French. I recommend combo #2.

Also, watch out for all the dog shit. Parisians seem to not feel the need to clean up after their pets.

Yes, that's what they're there for. I hope you arent one of those 'Merkins who packs their entire life into suitcases whenever they travel? Travel *light* or expect to become immobilized into expensive accomodations without any prospect for opportunistic forays into neighboring countries and what not. Anything bigger than a loosely packed hockey bag slung around your shoulders is way too much.

type bags, with the sliding handle and all. But I'm not sure I can fit a week and a halfs worth of clothes in one, especially if I want to bring more than one pair of pants. Although if I could do laundry in one of the hotels it wouldn't be a problem. The reason I'm concerned about the practicality of the train station lockers is because it seems like a bit of a trip to go back up there to retrieve them. The train station does have a subway or metro or whatever stop right?

The Regie Autonome des Transports Parisiens runs Metro, RER and bus lines into every nook and cranny of Paris including the 6 train stations (Gare Montparnasse, Gare d'Austerlitz, Gare du Nord, de l'Est, I cant remember them all, etc). Great city but keep your money in a zippered pocket because anyone who appear "lost" in the tourist sense may as well hang a "pickpocket me" sign on his back.

about an hour's train ride from Paris, so you'll have to count the travel time in there. That said, it is very...impressive. And large. Orsay is really cool, but so is the Picasso museum, so it depends on your preferences.

And do watch out for the dog shit.
