Like most USians, the editors of Adequacy.org rejoiced when George W. Bush was legitimately and fairly declared our new President-Elect. We believed that this election marked a victory for companies like Adequacy.org that compete fairly in the global marketplace. We believed that once again dedication and hard work would be the path to success and riches. We were wrong.
On Friday, the 8th of March we recieved official notice from the United States Department of Justice that they are pursuing action under sections 1 and 2 of the Sherman Antitrust Act to restrain alleged "anticompetetive conduct" on the part of Adequacy.org in developing and maintaining our monopoly on the truth. |

We at Adequacy.org consider this action to be unfair and baseless. We are supremely confident that we will be victorious in this case and will be able to continue sharing the light of truth with the ignorant masses. However, we understand that many of our readers might be unconfortable associating with an enterprise run by accused monopolist and have put together a brief analysis and response to the government's position.
The antitrust complaint hinges on 4 main points:
While we at Adequacy.org recognize that there is some truth in these allegations, we strongly deny that these practices are illegal or anti-competetive. Let's look at these points one by one: Adequacy.org currently provides more than 80% of the truth presented by media outfits and more than 90% of the truth provided by internet discussion sites. This is "technically" true, but are "media outfits" and "internet discussion sites" really the market in which Adequacy.org competes? Of course they aren't. We, the editors of Adequacy.org, believe that our site constitutes scripture rather than news. Our real competitors are not the likes of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. and AOL/Time Warner but the likes of The Book Of Mormon, The Koran and Dianetics. When you look at this market, our share of the truth is only about 64%, which does not meet the definition of a monopoly. Also, even if we do provide more than 90% of the truth on the internet, this does not create a barrier to entry for competitors. The only thing preventing sites like NYTimes.com or WashingtonPost.com from providing factual, honest reporting is sloth and avarice. There is no reason to believe that Adequacy.org prevents other sites from sharing the truth. They weren't doing it before we came around and there's no reason to believe they'll start if the government breaks us up. Finally we believe that the government's numbers are flawed. We believe that they have only looked at sites that matched Adequacy.org in wealth, power and influence. There are a great many sites like indymedia.com and davidicke.com that provide the truth and we believe this has been willfully ignored by the Department of Justice. In order to protect our valuable monopoly against potential competitive threats Adequacy.org actively seeks to expose falsehoods and dispell the clouds of lies and deceit spread by our competitors and potential competitors. Being truthful is far more than simply refraining from lies -- it involves a pursuit of all that is true and the rejection of falsehood. Adequacy.org does not expose the lies of others out of a contrary nature or an anticompetitive mean streak. We do it because we love the truth and will not rest untill all the peoples of the world can bask in its illuminating rays. Exposing falsehood does not damage the ability of our competitors to tell the truth. It is not "anti-competitive." What this so-called Department of Justice needs to realize is that by pointing out the errors and prevarications of others, we help them realize their errors and create the opportunity for them to join us. Why they do not is a curiosity, we suspect that they have hardened their hearts and do not conduct themselves with an eye single to the glory of God. Adequacy.org is unwilling to let its content compete on its own merits and instead leverages its marketshare by unfairly bundling truth and insight with their articles. The notion that Adequacy.org is unfairly bundling the truth with it's articles is patently absurd. The truth is deeply integrated into our articles. It is in every sentence, every word. Our articles are not lightweight comedic fluff meant to help bored employees waste company time, but are beacons of light in a dark and confusing world. If Adequacy.org is forced to ship the truth separately from it's articles than our articles will consist of a byline and a comment submission button with nothing in between. Furthermore, the government seems to believe that the truth is a separate product from our articles. Nothing could be further from the truth. Adequacy.org has always included the truth with its articles and the benefits to the consumer far outweigh any harm our competitors may experience. Adequacy.org has misused, and continues to misuse, its truth monopoly by requiring users of the site to agree to refrain from falsehood as a condition of posting comments and diary entries on the site and deleting comments and diaries that are less than truthful. We're sorry about that one actually. We've changed our editorial policies somewhat and will only delete comments and diaries that are obnoxious, regarless of the degree of truth or falsity containe therein.
