No American stood on the podium to receive either a gold, silver, or bronze medal, "Hail to the chief" was not sung once during the event and no one was there to wave the stars-n-stripes.

Whilst typical American games like beach volley ball, and drive-by shooting are not recognized events at the games. others like solo synchronised swimming, much beloved by G.W. Bush are.

So what is stoping America to joining up with other former colonies, and protectorates of the British Crown?

You must remember that historically, most states were never part of the British Empire. Florida broke off from the Spanish Empire to join the US. Louisiana was purchased from the French. Texas was an independent republic. Many of the western states were annexed from Mexico.

There are some states, like Virginia, that still proudly claim the title of Commonwealth. If citizens of Virginia want to compete in the Commonwealth games, I think that would be good. But I doubt you would find any Texans willing to compete.

America would dominate all the sports except the fake ones like Cricket. That would hardly be sporting.

The US originally rejected any notion of membership with the Commonwealth for the same reason they originally rejected membership in the ill-fated League of Nations. Up until the 1940's, the US followed a strict policy of political isolationism: no alliances with European countries. After the 1940's, the US felt no need to join the Commonwealth having established itself as a superpower.

Nowadays, even with the US's foreign policy, the odds are fairly well stacked against membership in the Commonwealth. On the one hand, the economic benefits would be good but the politlcal ramifications would probably kill any such notion. Having the Commonwealth demand to inspect America's political elections is strictly forbidden.
