 Silly Quote

I'm more than a bit disturbed by the notion of laws being adopted on the sole basis of human emotion. I don't know about you, but I really, really want sound, impartial reason based on scientific study as grounds for public policy decisions rather than the emotions of John Q. Public. --quartz

What law isn't based on human emotion?

If I wanted that, all I'd be saying "God is dead and we have killed him", or something equally provocative. But I'm not that mad.

It doesn't really ring my trollometer. I feel as though its authors were trying to be adequate and utterly failing.

in December 1999, and it's been there ever since. It was announced in all the fashionable web-logs at the time. More recently, I bookmarked those religious action-dolls.

I'd say you're wrong... (none / 0) (#5)

But then we'd have to get into a discussion about what a law is and the relationship between explanation and reality and all that, but I'm tired and neither of us really has the background and all I want to do is rock and roll. And I'd be wrong, 'cause it wouldn't be based on human emotion, but rather some git's curious fiddling with observations.

I'm curious as to why the author of the quote believes science would say anything about public policy without the injection of silly emotional religious value-judgments, such as "Death is bad" or "Avoid pain".

Cheers,
GZ

Several scientific pioneers of the 1960's developed the sex-peace hypotheses:

        sex = 1/love = peace²

It's just a hop and a step from there to the entirely empirically verifiable murder-bad social displacement theory.

I knew I should've reviewed the literature instead of relying on a pompous attitude and overpowering assertions.
