Communism is like graphical user interfaces. (none / 0) (#1)
by The Mad Scientist on Sun Mar 31st, 2002 at 06:26:54 PM PST
Good idea.

There is as far no one larger-scale implementation that wouldn't be botched.

there's a big difference though (5.00 / 1) (#2)
by foon on Sun Mar 31st, 2002 at 07:12:33 PM PST
The graphical user interface, like most Microsoft innovations, is the industry standard. The Luna interface of Windows XP is the #1 choice of consumers for ease of use and internet integration. And the superiority of the Windows interface to text-based operating systems such as CP/M, Unix and Lunix is clear in terms of volume shipped.

Whereas Communism has been a dismal failure wherever it has been tried, and has never produced a product with as much consumer appeal as a quality Microsoft operating system with a graphical user interface.

question (1.00 / 1) (#3)
by Anonymous Reader on Sun Mar 31st, 2002 at 10:48:48 PM PST
Are you referring to the innovation that is nothing more than a grphical sheel sitting on top of DOS? Maybe you mean the innovation of NT based OSes that grew out of the joint venture of IBM and Microsoft and bore OS/2. Either way it's far from innovative. Been there done that. Even now Windows is nothing more than a way to translate your double click into a command line.

Right click, Properties, Target = C:\windows\blah\blah\blah\program.exe

I've seen more innovations in failed attempts due to MS and/or poor marketing than you will ever see in a lifetime. Even if you bother to start paying attention. Perhaps in all this you are referring to Microsoft switching to a database filesystem. I thought it rather funny when a MS PR spin-master said "this has NEVER been done in a commercial OS before".

Apparently Microsoft has never heard of BeOS.

Sorry (5.00 / 1) (#5)

but i really am getting sick of these stupid ms trolls, i don't care whether or not windows has a better interface than linux or unix.. it matters only if the product works or not, please bury this dead horse it's been beaten way too much on this site already. am i the only one who doesn't give a shit about ms and linux? just stop it already

no kidding (none / 0) (#7)
by Anonymous Reader on Mon Apr 1st, 2002 at 01:21:50 AM PST
Just use what you use. So what if you like one over the other. So what if you like dealing with the problems of whatever OS you use. They all have some little quirks (some more than others). There are going to people that continue to use the Os they like and aren't going to change no matter how many problems you point out or how many hacker criminal comments you post.

So adequacy.org editors should shut their pie holes because they haven't got a clue and the rest should be quiet and accept that people like Windows.

I can accept... (5.00 / 1) (#11)
by budlite on Mon Apr 1st, 2002 at 08:19:40 AM PST
...that people like Windows - I like it up to a point.

What I can't accept is people who spread bullshit about other OS's and can't even get their facts straight.

i agree budlite (none / 0) (#13)
by DG on Mon Apr 1st, 2002 at 08:50:38 PM PST
but they do it to piss off the people who know anything about other OS, ie: lunix, token rings.. pretty much anything yoshi posts, just to troll us it's really sad when they can't even get windows dates right, like saying windows 98 came out in 94, it's kind of silly to get that one wrong

I hope you're not suggesting that the Adequacy countenances trolling. The Adequacy has a strict no-trolling policy.

You're half right (5.00 / 1) (#16)

They're lovers, that's for sure. The real bombshell is (and osm would never admit to this for fear of blowing his lonely loser cover) that Yoshi is really Eva Habermann.

Reread some of his comments. There's a distinct feminine yet Teutonic flavor to them.

At least get it right (none / 0) (#12)
by budlite on Mon Apr 1st, 2002 at 08:25:33 AM PST
The GUI isn't an MS innovation. It was developed by people at Xerox PARC in the '80s.

CP/M isn't exactly a real-world example of an "inferior" OS either, seeing as it's not been in use for a long time. Unix and Linux, however, are in use today, and in a lot of places. Even this site runs on a Unix.

You also assume that everyone *buys* Unix and Linux distributions. That's a pretty poor assumption, seeing as you don't *have* to. Most distributions are made freely available over the internet, and a few people only buy Linux/Unix to have access to technical support.

Oh, and Unix/Linux operating systems are quality OSs with GUIs.

How insightful. (4.00 / 1) (#6)
by RobotSlave on Mon Apr 1st, 2002 at 12:46:49 AM PST
Last time I checked, the "large scale implementation" of Communism, to wit, the Soviet Socialist Republic, had collapsed.

On the other hand, the "large scale implementation" of the Graphical User Interface, as embodied in the Windows, MacOS, OS X, and X Windows interfaces, had far outstripped the CLI for day-to-day use for the vast majority of computer users.

Than again, if you want to equate Communism with the Graphical User Interface, you are, of course, free to do so. Let me know if you need any tin-foil hat-liners. I've got a friend who can get you a great deal.

"Good in theory" (none / 0) (#18)
by Anonymous Reader on Tue Apr 2nd, 2002 at 09:58:52 AM PST
The "nice idea" line of argument against communism is one of the ones that annoys me the most. It's useually stated as "Communism would be perfect if everyone could just get along and make it work but people are too selfish so it wouldnt ever work, so good in theory but not in practice.". If communism misunderstands some basic part of human nature then its an extremely poor political theory, why bother with the half arsed semi-compliment of "Works in theory"? Why not just say what you mean?

It's Linux... (1.00 / 1) (#4)
by Anonymous Reader on Sun Mar 31st, 2002 at 11:32:46 PM PST
It's Linux...just because it is based off Unix doesn't mean the name has to be the same. Linux is a hybrid between the X of Unix and the creator's first name. That's all for now...

ok here we go (5.00 / 1) (#8)

First off learn to respond to posts. That diary entry made no mention of Linux. You're wither a twit that likes to get uniformed idiots all upset or don't know how to properly respond to individual comments.

I think you mean "Lenix". (-) (4.00 / 1) (#9)

nope (1.00 / 1) (#10)
by Anonymous Reader on Mon Apr 1st, 2002 at 01:45:07 AM PST
I mean Linux. The spelling Lenix actually comes from transcripts (and some "I like to pretend I know a thing or two about Linux" people). Hey you've got to give those people SOME credit. Some transcripts of various depositions in the ongoing Microsoft antitrust case Linus Torvalds is constantly misspelled.

"Tiemann of course may not entirely know what he's talking about, if the trial transcript is accurate. Asked whether Red Hat had developed Linux from scratch, he apparently answers no, " that was Lina Torbaugh." There you go - the Mortimer Mouse of Open Source, Linus' evil twin Lina. This is almost as good as the one we found years ago, where Ray White of Wyse apparently claimed: "The future is always two ennunecs." But we mustn't make fun of the hard-pressed transcribers." TheRegister UK

Now that's transcriptions. I mean some people thinking it may be spelled Lenix based on how it's pronounced may get away with it from time to time. Simply taking a few seconds to look it up usually corrects this. What I always find funny are people that just butcher words and start adding letters everywhere (ie Lenicks Toviltzeski).
