 My Conversion

 Comments:
My family has been almost completely Christian for at least 200 years, and was probably Christian long before that, although I have no records of that period. Until recently, I had always believed in Christianity myself; the Bible is a compelling book, especially if one does not read it too carefully. Recently, however, I have been considering a conversion.
Atheists have often smugly confronted me with proof of the Bible's fallacy. My personal favorite was a young woman who noted the passage in Kings which gives the value of 3 for pi. Never mind that giving an accurate value would require infinite space--atheists are always expecting God to do the impossible.

Recently, though, I took a vacation from work, stayed home and read through the New Testament of the Bible. I was horrified to find that the man I had been following was a pacifist, a liberal and possibly a communist. He was, essentially a cult leader.

I would convert this instant, but I do not know to what faith I should make my conversion. Ridiculous things like Wicca and Scientology are out of the question, but beyond that I am simply not well enough informed to make this decision. I must appeal to you, the readers of Adequacy.org, for information and debate about the religious or non-religious options open to me.

I tend to think of myself as... (none / 0) (#1)

'an enlightened christian'.

I know that my faith is flawed and because of that, I have decided to only obey and follow the rules and lifestyles that appeal to me.

Catholic priests have no problem breaking their own rules and committing acts of homosexuality with young boys...so why should I have a problem with doing what I want to do? I'd love to find a petite brown-haired girl of european descent around the age of 14 and impregnate her. Why shouldn't I do this? Laws are just there to prevent us from having fun; there is no "hell"...

Christianity is dumb, but I'm too lazy to find a better religion (like scientology), so I guess I'm stuck with it.

Jesus Himself would be considered a pacifist, a liberal and certainly a communist.
Don't be a christian.

Convert to Judaism, I find it to be nearly as easy as Buddhism. They are shady about the existence of an afterlife, pretty sure there is no hell, converting others is frowned upon, and they've only got one day of atonement. Basically, depending on the sect, it's like following an eastern religion but without the stigma of Christians hating you or the possibility of reincarnation as an animal.

Plus, you don't have to pray to a dirty hippie.

Go with Buddhism. It stipulates nothing supernatural that you have to believe, but gives you some neat rituals to follow anyway. And meditation really helps your focus and concentration, in general.

Except for the fact the Buddha was supposedly born out of a fucking lotus flower. And don't forget reincarnation.

They let you claim that any part of the Bible you don't like is a tranlation error or simply "not divinely inspired."

You do not choose a religion in the same way you choose a toothpaste or a soap powder.

That's what makes me so annoyed about Atheists. They mock those of us who believe things without proof, and yet they themselves believe in ridiculous things such as science.

I cannot take it seriously.

The difference between science and religion is that religions tend to not work for you when you don't believe in them.

That's the theory. If noone else can repeat the experiment with the same conditions and get the same results, it's not good science.

I am disinclined to consider Islam unless I am given a reason for the Islamic practice of destroying large buildings with hijacked aeroplanes.

Muslims (all 5 billion of them) had very little to do with the events of September 11th. Maybe they had a role as pawns in some larger game of chess, but that is probably all.

You might want to acquaint yourself with the literature and come back when you have thoroughly analysed the events.

Remember to keep asking yourself the one question: Who Benefits ?

Because, surely someone somewhere is making money out of this whole thing, I doubt it is Bin Laden.

You could look at the amazing discovery of an intact passport said to be from the wreckage of the WTC airliner. Or you could speculate as to which TV station Bush Jr was watching. You could see if anyone actually saw a plane hit the Pentagon. You could investigate Global Hawk technology. You could ask yourself why air defenses were stood down on 9/11. You could ask yourself if the US govt ever plotted terrorism against its own citizens in the past. You could ask yourself who killed JFK ?

Point is, you seem to be accepting what the media tells you at face value. Something which is unlikely to prove illuminating.

If there are 10million Muslims and only 6 million Jews in the USA, how come the USA policy is so hostile to Islamic interests ?

Are the Jews living in areas where their votes carry more influence ?
