After some browsing around, I finally found the proper mrtg graphs concerning our bandwidth usage. the only problem, is they're much higher than my internal graphs. Actually, they're about 15 times greater.

New Adequacy Feature?
Adequacy Update
So, Aphasia Networks doesn't have too many machines being used right now. We've got Adequacy, and a couple other weblogs. There's a few low low traffic static web sites, a shell server, and a low traffic shared box. Oh, and there's our Return to Castle Wolfenstein server, which uses about 180 kB/s. So, our total traffic should be around 250 kB at most. But, the switch is showing over 3 mB/s. That's a huge difference. So, I have to figure out what is wrong with my mrtg, and what is using all our bandwidth. It should be easy to first go about firewalling off all the machines and limit them to a certain amount of bandwidth. Then, I'll be able to raise the limits on machines that may need it. It shouldn't be too difficult.

Of course, it might hit the processor a bit more, but it cut their bandwidth in half.

Well, the only cause that makes sense... (5.00 / 2) (#2)

...is trolling. Trolling is well known for being the #1 waste of bandwidth on the Internet, and has brought down many a site much heftier than ours.

But after reading your diary I made a complete sweep of Adequacy and as usual found no evidence of trolling at all. There was a near-troll that I deleted yesterday, but since then? Nada. The Internet's main Troll sites know enough to fear us now, and they stay away, mostly. Sure you get one every once in a while, but not the kind of mass trolling you're talking about.

I'm stumped. What could it be?

I'll go read Yoshi's comments again. Sometimes I suspect him. Could he be doing it?

Most certainly not. I access Adequacy via legitimate means on a non-hacked browser. Perhaps you may want to check the logs for those users accessing Adequacy.org with illegal browsers that are known to leak data.
